Loyalty and ego often pull in opposite directions.

Loyalty is outward-facing: commitment to people, values, teams, or relationships even when it costs you something.
Ego is self-focused: protecting identity, status, pride, control, or the need to be right.

They can work together in healthy ways — confidence and self-respect can support loyalty. But problems start when ego becomes more important than truth, trust, or mutual respect.

A loyal friend admits they were wrong to preserve the relationship.
An ego-driven person doubles down because losing an argument feels worse than damaging the relationship.
Loyalty says, “How do we protect what matters?”
Ego says, “How do I protect how I look?”

There’s also a dangerous version of loyalty: loyalty to image rather than principle. That’s when ego disguises itself as loyalty:

defending someone no matter what,
refusing criticism,
