Felomino “Papa” Solis, now 80, stood quietly in the Conference Room during his farewell dinner with his eyes shining, as laughter, tears, and decades of stories from the staff and the business community of Rabaul was told around him. After 34 years, the Chief of Chefs of the iconic Rabaul Hotel had finally retired, marking the end of a life spent not just cooking meals, but feeding the community.

He was nine years old. And for nearly two years, he lived alone.

Friends, this happened in France between 2020 and 2022. A young boy, confirmed to be nine years old, was abandoned by his mother. She didn’t disappear. She didn’t leave the country. She moved in with her partner a few kilometers away and left her child behind in their apartment.

No adults.
No supervision.
No safety net.

And yet, every weekday morning, the boy woke up, got dressed, and went to school.

That’s the part that unsettles people.

Teachers described him as quiet. Polite. Homework done. Average to good grades. Nothing that demanded urgent attention. At home, his life was reduced to survival. No heating during winter. Cold showers. Meals made from cakes, canned food, and tomatoes he sometimes picked from nearby gardens. At night, he slept in layers of clothes to stay warm. He learned early that staying unnoticed was safer than asking for help.

For nearly two years, the system didn’t see him.

The truth surfaced only after neighbors raised concerns and authorities investigated. Inside the apartment, social services found a child who had been managing daily life alone. His mother was later convicted for child abandonment, and the boy was placed into foster care.

Here’s the part we don’t like to admit.

He didn’t survive because the system worked.
He survived because he adapted.

And that’s not resilience to celebrate.
That’s a failure we should remember.

Sometimes the children who need help most are the ones who never make noise.

A 21-year-old ginger cat named Pumpkin was carried across a graduation campus by the same person he grew up with since birth.

Pumpkin came into the family the same week the boy was born. He was found under a porch — tiny, cold, and barely able to hold up his head. And from that day on, he matched that child step for step. He slept by his crib. Sat by the door during school years. Stayed close during heartbreaks, illnesses, and every moment that felt too heavy for a kid to carry alone. 🐈

By the time graduation arrived, Pumpkin could barely stand. His legs shook. His breathing slowed. Everyone thought he was too weak to go… except him. On the morning of the ceremony, he crawled toward his owner and placed a paw on his shoe — as if asking for one last walk together. 👨🏼‍🎓

So he was wrapped in a blanket and held the entire day. Old. Fragile. But present. And when that stage moment came, Pumpkin lifted his head just enough to see it.
This wasn’t a story about a pet. It was about loyalty that doesn’t bend with age… and love that doesn’t need words to make itself understood. 😿

Maybe that’s the quiet truth we forget: some bonds stay until the very last step.

It has been a painfully slow process of obtaining the NCD Physical Planning approval for the GTTC Project, but we have finally achieved this. Obtaining Building Permit in NCD is indeed a painful exercise any one in the construction industry who has gone through will admit.
Slowly but surely, next Statutory bodies remaining to obtain approval is.
1. Water PNG
2. NCD Fire Department
3. NCD Health & Safety
4. NCD Engineering
5. NCD Building Board
