Although this interview was conducted in February 2026, we are pleased to finally share our first International Women’s Day interview featuring Ms. Regina Kiele—one of Papua New Guinea’s pioneering women in the geospatial field.
Originally from Manus Province, Ms. Kiele has more than 30 years of experience in the geospatial industry. She played an instrumental role in developing the early PNG Resource Information System (PNGRIS), earning her the special recognition, “Mama Bilong PNGRIS.”
After serving for 12 years with the Department of Agriculture and Livestock, she transitioned into academia. In 2002, when the first GIS and Remote Sensing courses were introduced at the University of Papua New Guinea, Ms. Kiele joined UPNG, where she continues to teach and inspire future generations.
Her journey is a powerful example of leadership, dedication, and the important contribution women make to GIS, Remote Sensing, and Papua New Guinea’s development.
