Remote working in the geospatial industry has transformed how professionals in Papua New Guinea can contribute to global projects directly from home.

After more than 16 years in formal office employment, transitioning into remote consultancy work has been both rewarding and challenging — especially with internet connectivity and power reliability realities in PNG. Yet, with emerging technologies such as Starlink, cloud systems, and digital collaboration tools, the opportunities for PNG geospatial professionals to become part of the global workforce are greater than ever before.

The future of work is changing, and the geospatial industry is right at the center of that transformation.

🌿 Webinar 3 of the Loss & Damage Series 🌿

📅 20 May 2026 | 🕝 2:30-4:00pm CEST (online)

Hosted by the PEDRR-FEBA Joint Working Group on Loss and Damage, this session explores how cities can better integrate Nature-based Solutions (NbS) to respond to escalating climate risks and loss and damage in urban areas 🏙️
As cities face growing climate pressures, from slow-onset changes to extreme events, nature is increasingly recognised as a key part of the solution for resilience, adaptation, and reducing losses and damages.

This session will bring together expert voices to discuss how NbS and ecosystem-based approaches are already being applied in cities, and how they can be scaled and embedded into urban planning, DRR, and policy frameworks.

Cyclone Maila has once again highlighted Papua New Guinea’s growing vulnerability to climate-driven disasters, as captured in recent reports by The National (Papua New Guinea newspaper).

This is a critical reminder that disaster management must shift from reactive response to proactive planning. With the rise of GeoAI and platforms like Google Earth Engine, PNG has the opportunity to leverage predictive geospatial technologies to better prepare for and mitigate future risks.

Investing in data, systems, and capacity is no longer optional—it is essential for building resilient communities.

This article discusses the importance of embracing new technology trends, such as GeoAI (Geospatial Artificial Intelligence), in disaster management in PNG.
