Understanding The Life Cycle of Pigs: From Birth to Market
Most farmers know the stages… but the real difference is how you manage each one.
Let’s break it down:
1. Birth (Farrowing Stage)
This is where everything starts, and mistakes here can cost you piglets.
What to do:
Prepare a clean, dry pen before farrowing
Provide bedding (sawdust, straw) to keep piglets warm
Make sure piglets take colostrum within the first 6 hours (very important for survival)
Watch for weak piglets and assist them to suckle
Cut and disinfect the navel cord to prevent infection
👉 Goal: Keep piglets warm, alive, and strong from day one
2. Nursing (Lactation Stage)
This stage determines how fast and healthy your piglets will grow.
What to do:
Ensure the sow is well-fed (she’s feeding many piglets)
Provide clean water at all times
Check that all piglets are suckling (no one should be left behind)
Introduce creep feed from day 7–10
Keep the pen clean to avoid diarrhea
👉 Goal: Strong immunity + fast early growth
3. Weaning Stage
This is where many farmers lose piglets due to stress.
What to do:
Wean gradually (don’t rush it), usually 4–6 weeks
Keep piglets in a familiar environment (avoid too much stress)
Feed small quantities but frequently
Use highly digestible feed (don’t switch feed suddenly)
Provide clean water and maintain hygiene
👉 Goal: Reduce stress and prevent post-weaning diarrhea
4. Grower Stage
Now your focus shifts to fast and efficient weight gain.
What to do:
Feed balanced rations (your PKC, maize, soya mix works here)
Monitor weight gain regularly
Deworm and vaccinate as needed
Avoid overcrowding in pens
Keep feeding consistent (don’t starve, don’t overfeed)
👉 Goal: Steady, healthy growth
5. Finisher Stage
This is where you make your money, or lose it.
What to do:
Focus on high-energy feed for weight gain
Avoid unnecessary stress (it affects feed efficiency and conversion)
Sort pigs by size to reduce competition
Maintain good hygiene
Monitor for diseases
👉 Goal: Reach market weight quickly and efficiently
6. Market / Harvest Stage
Time to convert your effort into profit.
What to do:
Sell at the right weight (not too small, not too fat)
Target high-demand periods
Build relationships with buyers, butchers, or processors
Ensure pigs are healthy before sale
👉 Goal: Maximize profit per pig
Good pig farming is not about just feeding, it’s about managing each stage correctly.
A mistake at the beginning will show at the end.
