With hard hats worn proudly and pins placed close to their hearts, students from the School of Engineering and Architecture (SEA) of Saint Louis University (SLU) gathered at the Prince Bernhard (PB Gym) for the Hard Hat and Pinning Ceremony on May 10, marking a significant step towards their future professions.
Held in both morning and afternoon batches, the whole-day event brought together aspiring engineers and architects, faculty members, department heads, and families in a celebration rooted in faith, gratitude, and responsibility. Carrying the theme, โ๐บ๐๐๐ข๐๐๐๐๐ ๐โ๐๐๐๐ฆ ๐๐ ๐ธ๐กโ๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐ก๐๐๐,โ the ceremony highlighted the importance of applying knowledge and skills with integrity and service.
This event began with a student procession, followed by a eucharistic celebration highlighting the message, โIn everything we do, we do it out of love,โ which grounded the ceremony in faith, gratitude, and purpose.
After the mass, the ceremony continued with the singing of the Philippine national anthem, led by MUSICEA, and the processional of faculty, department heads, and the dean to recognize their efforts in laying the foundation for future professionals.
In the opening remarks of the SEA Dean, Engr. Jeffrey Des B. Binwag emphasized the deeper meaning behind the ceremony. He reminded that the occasion was not merely a symbol but a reflection of the responsibility the candidates should take to serve others.
โIn todayโs hard-hatting and pinning, we are grounding theory in ethical reality,โ Engr. Binwag stated, highlighting the importance of applying technical knowledge with the universityโs core values.
As students from both batches received their hard hats and pins, the venue was filled with applause, smiles, and emotional moments shared among classmates, mentors, and families. For many candidates, the ceremony served as recognition of years of sacrifice and as assurance that they are a step closer to their dreams.
A solemn moment followed, marked by a professional oath. With raised hands and determined faces, the students pledged to uphold the principles and responsibilities expected of future engineers and architects.
When asked about the significance of the hard hat and pin, third-year Civil Engineering student Ian Miles Reyes said that it represents the journey of the students, โFor me, [ang] sinisymbolize ng hard hatting [are] strength, perseverance, and excellence.โ
โSobrang saya ko kasi part ako ng ceremony today. Important kasi yung hard hat at pinning before OJT kasi para siyang transition from classrooms to workplace,โ shared Gwendelyn Nicole Zuรฑiga, a third-year Electrical Engineering student, highlighting the importance of events like this in reminding future professionals of the responsibilities and purpose that come with their chosen field.
Meanwhile, Engr. Lhord Vladhimir P. Bilgera, faculty in-charge of the event, highlighted that the ceremony was carefully planned not only to celebrate the studentsโ achievements, but also to inspire them as they take their first steps toward professional practice.
To conclude the event, Associate Dean Engr. Caroline M. Bautista delivered the closing remarks, reminding the future professionals that their future careers extend beyond technical plans and structures because engineering and architecture are about people.
Beyond being a symbolic tradition, the Hard Hat and Pinning Ceremony serves as a reminder of the purpose future engineers and architects carry โ to use their skills not only for professional success, but also for the betterment of the country. Behind every calculation, design, and project lies a commitment to humanity, ethics, and service.
As students left the venue wearing their hard hats and pins, they also carried with them the responsibility to uphold excellence, integrity, and compassion in the path they chose to pursue.
