The original name of Burj Khalifa was Burj Dubai (برج دبي), meaning “Dubai Tower.”
It was officially renamed Burj Khalifa on January 4, 2010, during its grand opening. The new name honored Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, then President of the UAE and ruler of Abu Dhabi.

Fun fact: The renaming was announced during the opening ceremony itself. So the building that had been known worldwide as Burj Dubai suddenly became Burj Khalifa.

A glimpse into the architecture of National Artist Leandro V. Locsin. 🇵🇭🏛️

Known for his powerful modernist forms, bold use of concrete, and iconic floating volumes, Locsin created architecture that became deeply connected with Filipino culture and identity.

From the Cultural Center of the Philippines to the Church of the Holy Sacrifice, his works continue to influence generations of Filipino architects.

Architecture is not just about buildings. It is about leaving something that speaks to generations.

Green roofs are no longer just architectural features that enhance a building's appearance. They are integrated living systems that contribute to sustainable design by improving environmental performance, supporting biodiversity, and enhancing the quality of life for building occupants.

By incorporating vegetation on top of roof assemblies, these systems convert otherwise unused roof areas into functional green spaces. In addition to creating visually appealing environments, green roofs help manage stormwater runoff, reduce solar heat absorption, improve air quality, and contribute to more resilient urban communities.

Green roof systems are commonly grouped into three categories: extensive, semi-intensive, and intensive. The classification is based on factors such as growing medium depth, structural loading, maintenance requirements, and the range of plant species that can be supported. Extensive systems use shallow soil profiles and hardy vegetation that require minimal maintenance, while intensive systems feature deeper soil layers capable of supporting shrubs, trees, gardens, and even recreational parks. Semi-intensive systems provide a balance between these two approaches.

Aside from improving a building's thermal performance and helping reduce the urban heat island effect, green roofs also protect waterproofing membranes from weather-related deterioration, extending the service life of the roof assembly. They create habitats for birds, insects, and pollinators, increase urban biodiversity, and provide accessible outdoor spaces that promote recreation and well-being, especially in densely developed cities.

Bakit mahalaga ang desisyon ng Architect sa project mo? 🏛️

Maraming tao ang nag-iisip na ang architect ay taga-design lang ng magandang bahay o building. Pero ang totoo, ang bawat desisyon ng architect ay may malaking epekto sa buong project.

Hindi lang kami nagdo-drawing. Kami rin ang gumagabay sa tamang paraan ng construction, tumutulong sa pag-manage ng buong team, at nagbibigay ng tamang direksyon para maiwasan ang mga pagkakamali na pwedeng magdulot ng delay, dagdag gastos, o mas malala, safety issues.

Isa rin sa pinakamahalagang responsibilidad ng architect ang pagpili ng tamang materyales. Hindi dahil mas mahal ay mas maganda, at hindi rin dahil mas mura ay mas praktikal. Ang bawat rekomendasyon ay nakabase sa tibay, kalidad, functionality, maintenance, at kung ano ang pinakamainam para sa project sa pangmatagalan.

May mga pagkakataon ding kailangan naming gumawa ng desisyong hindi agad magugustuhan ng client, contractor, o ng ibang tao sa paligid. At okay lang iyon. Hindi lahat ng tamang desisyon ay magiging popular.

Bilang architect, ang responsibilidad namin ay protektahan ang project, hindi lang ang present kundi pati ang future nito. Minsan kailangan naming sabihin ang katotohanan kahit hindi ito ang gustong marinig.

Kaya kung may architect kang pinagkakatiwalaan, bigyan mo rin siya ng pagkakataong gawin ang kanyang trabaho. Siya ang may kabuuang vision ng proyekto at ang bawat desisyon niya ay may dahilan.

Ang magandang design ay nakikita. Ang magandang desisyon ay nararamdaman sa tibay, kalidad, at mahabang buhay ng isang proyekto.
