On May 31, 1889, the South Fork Dam in Pennsylvania failed after days of heavy rainfall, sending a massive wall of water toward the communities below.

Why Nagasaki Became the Target

On August 9, 1945, an atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki, Japan. But Nagasaki was not the mission's primary target.

The original target was Kokura. Heavy cloud cover and smoke obscured the aiming point, while the Bockscar was also facing a serious fuel shortage. After multiple attempts to locate the target, the crew turned toward its secondary target: Nagasaki.
