A hip roof is effective against typhoons due to its aerodynamic shape, which allows wind to flow smoothly over all four sides of the structure, reducing uplift pressure. This design, along with its symmetrical, self-bracing structure, distributes wind and weight evenly, making it more stable and resistant to damage than a gable roof, which has flat ends that can catch the wind. The slopes also ensure better water drainage, which minimizes leaks and pooling during heavy rainfall.
