To read IV Curve, start with voltage. Then, draw vertical line toward the curve. At the intersection point at the curve, draw a line to the left. Then read the current in Amperes. That's the output current of the solar panel.

How to Calculate Output Power of Solar PV Panel?

Solar PV Panels are rated at Standard Test Condition (STC), that is, at 25 deg. C temperature, and 1 kW/m2 irradiance. The 25 deg. C refers to the "solar cell" temperature.

JICA experts developed an empirical formula to calculate output power of pv module when cell temperature changes. Here's an illustration to calculate output power when solar cells get hot.

For a safe solar installation, the Philippine Electrical Code contains lots of guide that will help you design your solar PV system, like sizing the wires, grounding system, and over current protection.

For instance, page 671 can guide one on correct sizing of PV wires, etc. Page 713 guides one to size up the size of wire from the inverter..

Important details, like Derating of Wire Ampacity, are also discussed in the Code.

What's inside the junction box at the back of a Solar PV Panel?

Some would say it's a "Blocking" diode. This is not correct.

Fact is, the diode at the back of a solar pv panel is a "Bypass" diode. There's 1 bypass diode connected across every 18 cells or 20 cells of a pv panel.

Dr. Akio Shiota, international expert on solar pv systems, has this to say about Bypass Diodes:

1. Bypass Diodes prevent hot spots when a solar cell is shaded or bird droppings are on a cell.
2. They allow utilization of healthy solar pv modules of a faulty string by allowing bypass current.

What is Solar Irradiance?

Irradiance is the intensity of solar radiation energy. The unit is kW/sq. meter or W/sq. meter.

Output current and output power from a solar panel is directly proportional to solar irradiance. At noon time, during a sunny day with no clouds, irradiance is at its highest, around 1 kW/sq. meter.

Voltage drop causes power loss in solar pv systems.

Proper wire sizing in a solar pv system can minimize voltage drop, and reduces power loss.

Let's say, between a solar pv panel and a charge controller, there's a voltage drop of 0.5 V. When the output current of the solar pv panel is 6 Amps, the power loss on the cables from the pv panel to the charge controller can be calculated using power formula:
P loss = V drop x Ouput current
= 0.5 V x 6 A
= 3 Watts

It looks simple, but many people are not aware of voltage drops. Voltage drop depends on current flowing in a wire, and wire resistance.

Solar User Education

As solar installers, it's our duty to educate users. After completing the installation, we teach them proper operation, proper load management, and what to monitor on a daily basis, in order that the pv system can have a long life -- especially the batteries.

User manual is written on a language or dialect the users can understand. Line by line of the user manual, the installer teaches the user and let;s the user do basic hands on on the operation and maintenance of the solar pv system.
