STILL ROASTING TIPS #2: Don’t Fear the Chaff

Those flakes and bits around your beans? That’s chaff — and it tells a story.

It’s what’s left after the silver skin burns off during roasting. Too much means your airflow or drum speed might need tweaking. Too little? You might be overcompensating with airflow and losing heat control.

The goal: balanced airflow — clean roast, even development, and that perfect aroma when the chaff settles.

Keep your eyes on the details. That’s where the roast magic happens.

☕ Coffee Roasting Tip of the Day:
Listen to the beans.

Every great roast has its rhythm — the first crack is your cue that the beans are entering the development stage. From this point, every second matters.
👉 Too short, and you’ll get grassy, underdeveloped flavors.
👉 Too long, and you risk losing the bean’s origin character.

Learn to trust your senses — sight, smell, and sound — they’re your best guides to perfecting your roast.
