One thing we really love about our work is being involved right from the very beginning of a project.
For this two-storey residence in Tigbauan, Iloilo, the client commissioned us to help conceptualize the house layout based on a design inspiration they liked.
Why do we love being involved this early? Because this is where we can provide the most valueโnot just by making the design look good, but by thinking about how everything will actually work together.
Here are some things we considered during the design process:
- We carefully positioned the columns to minimize interference with the architectural layout while maintaining an efficient structural framing system. This helps us avoid unnecessary structural irregularities, improve seismic performance, and potentially reduce construction costs.
- We also think about where the PVC pipes, downspouts, soil pipes, and water lines will go. The goal is to keep them as concealed as possible, both inside and outside the house, without embedding them in structural members where they shouldn't be. After all, nobody wants exposed pipes ruining an otherwise beautiful design, right?
- Instead of going straight for a roof deck, we studied the geometry of the roof and used trigonometry to develop a conventional roof truss system. This allowed us to achieve sufficient roof slope while keeping the roof discreet from the intended viewing angles.
We also carefully positioned the inside gutters in locations where constructability is better and leak prevention is easier. In case leaks occur in the future, we considered placing them where potential leaks would cause minimal damage and where repairs would be easier to carry out.
- We always try to make our models as detailed as possible. We don't stop at modeling the major structural elements. Whenever practical, we also include ceilings, lighting fixtures, purlins, bolts, PVC elbows, P-traps, and even actual convenience outlets and switches. This allows us to perform clash detection (checking which elements interfere with one another) so we can resolve potential issues before they even occur during actual construction, saving time, money, and resources.
These are just some of the things we take the time to consider at ACR Engineering. We believe good design isn't just about what you see in the final output; it's also about the countless details considered behind the scenes to save time, money, and resources.
