Protection Coordination of Obsolete Protective Devices
One of the essential studies in Electrical Design Analysis (EDA) is Protection Coordination. This study is necessary to ensure proper protection discrimination and selectivity, preventing unnecessary or undesired tripping of upstream protective devices during electrical fault conditions.
Performing a protection coordination study for a new electrical system is relatively straightforward, especially with the aid of modern power system analysis software. However, conducting the same study on an existing or aging electrical system presents a greater challenge. Legacy protective devices and obsolete technologies within the power network can become critical elements that must be carefully evaluated and coordinated to ensure the safe, selective, and reliable operation of an industrial plant.
One major challenge is that the Time-Current Characteristic (TCC) curves of obsolete protective devices may no longer be available in the built-in libraries of modern power system software. The question then becomes: How can these legacy protective devices be incorporated into a protection coordination study to ensure proper discrimination, reliability, and safe plant operation, especially when they represent critical points in the electrical network?
This is where advanced engineering knowledge, supported by modern technology, becomes invaluable.
The figures below show the original hard-copy TCC curve of an obsolete protective device obtained from an old product catalogue and the corresponding extracted TCC data points converted into an Excel-compatible format. These data points can then be incorporated into the power system model, allowing the legacy protective device to be represented and evaluated alongside modern protection equipment.
With the combination of engineering expertise, historical technical data, and advanced digital tools, even obsolete protective devices can be incorporated into a modern power discrimination and protection coordination study.
Technology may evolve, but existing electrical systems must still operate safely and reliably.
