Engr. Ceidge Razon believes the workers keeping our cities clean deserve to be recognized as the urban innovators they truly are. As Chief Sustainability Officer at BEST Solutions and a TESDA Master Trainer, he is doing exactly that , transforming waste management into dignified, technology-enabled green jobs through the AI Ready ASEAN program.

The shift he has witnessed speaks for itself: "The most noticeable change is the confidence of the learners when they talk about technology. They aren't scared of the words 'algorithm' and 'iteration' anymore."

When participants realized the same sorting logic they use daily on the job could train an AI to recognize and segregate waste materials, the classroom became a real-world problem-solving session. That is AI literacy in action.

[HUMAN IMPACT STORY] This is what AI Ready looks like on the ground.

At Davao Oriental State University, Dr. Lanie doesn't just teach Artificial Intelligence -- she translates it. Her workshops bring together children, students, parents, faculty, and government employees, all in the same room, all asking the same honest question: what does this mean for me?

Her answer is never the same twice. And that is exactly the point.

"Each session brings me to distinct perspectives on how they understand Artificial Intelligence," Dr. Lanie shares. "These interactions shaped my daily professional life and deepened my understanding on how AI works beyond the technical applications."

As a Master Trainer under the AI Ready ASEAN program, Dr. Lanie has made it her mission to strip away the jargon and meet her community where they are -- grounding AI in the cultural and professional realities of Mindanao, not in abstract theory. The result is not just digital literacy. It is confidence. Critical thinking. A community that sees itself as part of the AI conversation, not outside of it.

"I am empowered to contribute to AI-ready informed communication across sectors," she says.

So is every person who walks out of her classroom.

SmartCT extends its gratitude to four exceptional interns who recently completed their practicum with us, all from our partner institution, Davao Oriental State University.

Shena Claire Gonzales, John Gabriel Centino, Hazelle Joy Ibañez, and Mazzy Grace Olarte brought energy, curiosity, and genuine commitment to the work. All four are BS Information Technology students, and every one of them showed up ready to contribute.

Digital governance in ASEAN has a policy problem : not a shortage of policies, but a gap between what gets written and what gets done.

SmartCT's Executive Director Kris R. Villanueva-Libunao joined the panel "How Women Leaders are Shaping Digital Regulation and Tech Policy in the Philippines and ASEAN Region" at AIBC Asia 2026, moderated by Claire Celdran of CoinGeek.

Her message was straightforward: data poverty is a governance failure. When local governments claim data-driven policymaking but lack the data to back it, the people most excluded are those least visible in existing datasets ; starting with women.

It was a conversation worth having, made sharper by the panelists who shared the platform. Atty. Jocelle Batapa-Sigue named what many avoid saying: good laws are not enough if the people who make policy are not consulting those it affects.

Atty. Agnes VST Devanadera reminded the room that technology cannot substitute for institutional integrity.

Griselda Gloria-Santos pushed back on growth-centric narratives, arguing that with barely a quarter of ASEAN's population fully in the digital economy, inclusion is not a footnote , it is the measure.

Donessa Arbas brought it to the ground level: innovation that does not reach MSMEs and grassroots entrepreneurs is not really innovation.
