The moment-curvature (M–ϕ) relationship is a fundamental tool in structural engineering that describes how a structural member responds to bending. It relates the applied bending moment (M) to the resulting curvature (ϕ) of a section, providing insight into both the strength and deformation characteristics of the member.
It goes beyond determining the maximum bending strength of a member. It provides a comprehensive understanding of stiffness, strength, ductility, and post-yield behavior, making it an indispensable tool for the design and assessment of modern structures, particularly those subjected to extreme loading such as earthquakes, wind, and impact.
