Moonlit Night Above the Clouds

This evening I was out for a peaceful meditative drive around town. I decided to take a trek up Rampart Range road after I got a coffee.

After awhile heading up the road, I eventually came out above the thick clouds that covered the city all day long and into a beautiful dusk evening.

I ran into a few photographer friends along the way, and I decided to hang out for a little while. Before long the moon was the only light source left, and I set out to take a few photos before heading back down.

What compelled me to take this specific shot was the star/planet centered above the summit lights of Pikes Peak. I released the shutter for a 20 second exposure and one of the most amazing fireballs I have ever witnessed fell just a little to the left of Pikes Peak.

Joe, Kimmie, and I watched the fireball break apart in the sky as I looked at my camera still exposing for the photo. I was very delighted that I was properly framed up, focused, exposed and shutter open for just the right amount of time to catch this beautiful sight above a sea of clouds. :)

I have never had much luck with meteors and fireballs. Meteors generally don't show up very well in photos, as they go through way too fast. The beautiful sights witnessed in photos are the far more dramatic, bright, and slow fireballs, such as this.

Clouds of glowing gas mingle with dust lanes in the Trifid Nebula, a star forming region toward the constellation of the Archer (Sagittarius). In the center, the three prominent dust lanes that give the Trifid its name all come together. Mountains of opaque dust appear on the right, while other dark filaments of dust are visible threaded throughout the nebula.

A single massive star visible near the center causes much of the Trifid's glow. The Trifid, also known as M20, is only about 300,000 years old, making it among the youngest emission nebulae known. The nebula lies about 9,000 light years away and the part pictured here spans about 10 light years.

The above image is a composite with luminance taken from an image by the 8.2-m ground-based Subaru Telescope, detail provided by the 2.4-m orbiting Hubble Space Telescope, color data provided by Martin Pugh and image assembly and processing provided by Robert Gendler.
