Solar energy refers to the radiant light and heat from the Sun that is harnessed using various technologies, primarily for generating electricity or providing heat for various applications. The Earth receives an enormous amount of solar energy, and tapping into this vast and renewable resource has become an essential component of sustainable energy strategies.
Solar energy has several advantages, including being a clean and renewable energy source, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and requiring minimal maintenance once the infrastructure is in place. However, it also has challenges, such as intermittency (day-night cycle and weather-dependent), the need for energy storage solutions, and the initial cost of installing solar technologies.
There are two main ways to harness solar energy:
Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Systems:
Photovoltaic cells, commonly known as solar cells, convert sunlight directly into electricity. These cells are made of semiconductor materials, such as silicon, and generate a flow of electricity when exposed to sunlight.
Solar panels consist of an array of these solar cells and can be installed on rooftops, in solar farms, or integrated into various devices to generate electricity for residential, commercial, or industrial use.
Solar Thermal Systems:
Solar thermal systems use sunlight to generate heat. This can be achieved through various methods, such as concentrating sunlight to create high temperatures or using flat-plate collectors to absorb sunlight for heating water or air.
