Driven by its commitment to a diversified and reliable energy portfolio that fuels economic growth and improves the lives of all Filipinos, the Philippines is actively exploring nuclear energy as a vital pathway to energy security and a sustainable future. As a key step in this initiative, the Department of Energy (DOE), through the Nuclear Energy Program Inter-Agency Committee (NEP-IAC), convened a National Workshop on Nuclear Power Infrastructure and Financing in Manila from 20-24 October 2025. The workshop united experts from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the private sector, and government agencies to delve into the critical aspects of nuclear energy development, including regulatory frameworks, financing and ownership models, and the potential deployment of both large-scale and small modular reactors tailored to the Philippine context.
This forward-looking endeavor is firmly supported by the recent enactment of the Philippine National Nuclear Energy Safety Act (Republic Act No. 12305), establishing a strong legal and regulatory foundation for the nation's nuclear energy program.
