NASA is exploring a new way to build habitats in space using mushrooms. In 2018, the NASA Innovative Advanced Concepts program funded a project led by Lynn Rothschild to study how mycelium, the root network of mushrooms, can grow into strong structures.
Researchers found that mushroom mycelium can bind organic material together, forming solid shapes that can be turned into building materials. Instead of transporting heavy construction materials, only small amounts of fungal culture would be needed, which could grow on-site.
According to NASA estimates, sending materials to Mars is extremely costly, making lightweight and self-growing systems more practical.
Studies such as Mitchell Jones 2018 research show that mycelium-based materials can achieve strength comparable to traditional materials while remaining lightweight and resistant to heat.
NASA is testing mushroom species like Ganoderma and Fomes fomentarius for this purpose.
This research highlights how mushroom science may play a role in future space exploration.
