Diagnosis: AC System leak

When your vehicle's AC system develops a refrigerant leak it can be challenging to detect due to the fact that refrigerant fluid instantly evaporates when it comes in contact with air. A professional mechanic uses specialized tools to determine if there is a leak by introducing nitrogen pressure or ultraviolet fluid to show signs of low refrigerant pressure in the AC system.
Signs of an AC system refrigerant leak:

Diagnosis: Black oil or “Black death”

What is "Black Death"?
"Black Death," as it is known by A/C system service professionals, results from a catastrophic breakdown of the refrigerant-lubricant which in turn causes excessive wear inside the compressor. In a typical case of "Black Death," metal particles are circulated throughout the system contaminating other components and necessitating either thorough flushing or complete replacement.

Recognizing the problem
in several ways:

• Your compressor may be functional, but extremely noisy during operation.

• In turning the compressor clutch, you may feel "hard" spots.

• The compressor may be totally frozen or locked up.

• Signs of contamination may be present at the or***ce tube and/or the inlet and outlet ports when the hose manifold is removed.

Solving the problem.
Depending on the severity of the damage and the extent of the contamination, some "Black Death" problems can be repaired by flushing the A/C system with solvents. Segments of the system are cleansed individually. Either process, flushing or filtering, can be very time consuming and expensive. At the minimum, a new compressor must be installed following this procedure. Frequently, other components also require replacement. From a cost and performance viewpoint, many A/C system technicians find that replacement of all contaminated components is the best approach.

1. AC Fan Doesn’t Start
Even though you have the AC turned on, the fan does not start.

3. Slow Rotating Blades
The blades rotate very slowly when the fan turns on.
4. Outside Fan Blades Are Still

Symptoms of a Bad or Failing Evaporator

1. The cool air is weak or no cold air is blowing at all. When the AC Evaporator coil or core is leaking, it will impact the effectiveness of the air conditioning system. Generally speaking, the greater the leak, the cooling capacity is reduced.

2. You notice a strange odor when using your AC system. If your AC evaporator is leaking, a small amount of refrigerant (not coolant) will seep from the coil, core, or seals. This will produce a sweet aroma, which might get more intense when the AC is turned on.

3. The AC compressor will not activate. The compressor is intended to circulate refrigerant through the evaporator. It depends on maintaining a predetermined pressure to operate. As such, if there is a leak, there is reduced pressure within the system and the compressor will not activate.

4. The AC temperature will vary. If the AC evaporator has a small leak, it can continue to cool air. However, if the temperature is inconsistent, it’s a possible indicator of a damaged AC evaporator.
