Today’s satellite imagery revealed Corregidor Island, a historic island located at the entrance of Manila Bay.

As we conclude our Philippine Space Week activity, we would like to thank everyone who joined, submitted their answers, shared our posts, and followed the daily puzzles throughout the week. Your participation helped make this activity more engaging and gave everyone the opportunity to explore the Philippines from a different perspective through SATELLITE IMAGERY.

𝐂𝐨𝐫𝐫𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐝𝐨𝐫 𝐈𝐬𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝 is located at the mouth of Manila Bay. Although it is closer to Bataan, it is part of Cavite and is administratively under Cavite City. Its strategic location made it an important defense of Manila Bay, especially during the American colonial period and World War II. The island is home to the Malinta Tunnel, which served as a headquarters, hospital, storage area and communications center during the war. Today, Corregidor is preserved as a national shrine and contains several memorials commemorating its role in Philippine history.⁣

High-resolution satellite imagery can be used to monitor changes in our islands, map its historical and cultural sites, and support the preservation and management of its important heritage areas. We can even detect ships or vessels that enter our seas and observe their behavior and activities.⁣

𝐌𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭 𝐈𝐬𝐚𝐫𝐨𝐠 is a stratovolcano located in Camarines Sur. It is one of the 4 active volcanoes (along with Iriga, Bulusan and Mayon) in the Bicol Volcanic Arc Complex. The last known eruption occurred in 3500 BCE (about 5,500 years ago). One of Isarog’s most visible features in this image is its breached edifice that drains into the Rangas River. It houses the Mount Isarog Natural Park (MINP) and a variety of endemic flora and fauna species.⁣

High cadence satellite imagery allows us to monitor activities and changes in volcanoes, map the extent of vulnerable or affected area and support disaster risk mitigation, management and response.⁣

𝐓𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐦 𝐈𝐬𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝 is considered the largest freshwater island in the Philippines, located in the largest freshwater body in the country, Laguna de Bay. It belongs to both the Municipalities of Binangonan and Cardona and has a blade-like shape which is where the name “Talim” (meaning “sharp”) came from. Mt. Tagapo (or Susong Dalaga), the highest point of Talim Island, is at 438 meters (1,437 feet) above sea level. The Island was mentioned in El Filibusterismo (Chapter 3: Mga Alamat), a novel written by Jose Rizal.⁣

Through satellite data and remote sensing we can monitor coastal changes, water quality, investigate developments or changes brought by human interventions, and appreciate unique geological features.⁣
