Acoustic Partial Discharge Testing on Medium Voltage RMU

During our Acoustic Partial Discharge (APD) assessment of a Ring Main Unit (RMU), a strong acoustic signal was detected, initially indicating possible partial discharge activity.

After detailed analysis, the signal was determined not to be Partial Discharge**. No characteristic internal or surface discharge patterns were observed.

The actual source of the noise was identified as a high-frequency mechanical vibration caused by a loose connection in the Medium Voltage dead elbow termination**.

Although no partial discharge was present, this condition is still critical. Loose MV connections can lead to overheating, insulation damage, and eventual equipment failure if left uncorrected.

This case demonstrates the value of advanced diagnostic testing in accurately distinguishing between true electrical discharge and mechanical noise, allowing corrective action to be taken before a costly outage occurs.
