This is a thermogram of a finished paper roll. You can see the non-uniform thermal profile with moisture in the center (yellow). Ideally the red line in the graph should be straight.

A quick scan of substation when driving by it. Cannot see all the thermal anomalies but using software can help identify at least the worst issues by adjusting the Span. You can see the worst issues when the screen is black.

The highest temp was 50degC. Although this doesn't seem high, there are a couple of things to keep in mind. Distance--this was taken 20-30meters away. Measurements are not accurate at that distance. And this relates to the second point--Spatial Resolution. Based on your camera, you have a Spot Size ratio. For example, if you have a Spot Ratio of 1:25 this means that if the component is 1 cm big, then the farthest you can be is 25cm. After which your camera is calculating the average temperature based on the objects surrounding the source of the issue. If your background is the sky, then your camera is actually taking parts of the sky's temp and averages it within your MFOV (Measurement Field of View). In other words, you get more of an inaccurate measurement. And the other defining factor would be emissivity. You don't know the emissivity value of the component you are measuring. Is it polished or is there oxidation on the metal. If the reason we are able to see the anomaly is because there is oxidation on the component, then its already in bad shape! If it is polished and is still exhibiting 50degC, then we have a big problem. I would venture to say that the temp is actually over 100degC, given the 3 factors I mentioned earlier.

All materials emit electromagnetic radiation differently depending on their emissivity value. On the kettle are rust, oil stains, and polished aluminum (also the plastic handle which is heated up). what would the burner grate under the kettle look like thermally if they were polished?

This is an thermogram of part of a solar plant. If you zoom in you can see many module defects. There can be many issues with component and termination issues in sub/ switching stations, combiner boxes, string inverters, or MVPSs, need not mention solar modules.

(Drone) Thermography is a pretty effective tool in its diagnosis.
If you count up all the defects and faults, you wonder whether the plant is producing the power it's supposed to export.
