JUSTICE FOR THE TOBOSO 19!
AGHAM Diliman is one in deeply mourning the passing of UPD USC Councilor Alyssa Alano, journalist RJ Ledesma, peasant advocates Errol Wendel and Maureen Keil Santuyo, and the rest of the Toboso 19. We comdemn, in the strongest terms, their brutal murder at the hands of state forces last April 19.
For many decades, the people of Negros have faced widespread landlessness, rampant militarization, and intense poverty & exploitaton. We have the highest admiration for Alyssa, RJ, Errol, and Maureen, who sought to live and learn among the most marginalized sectors of society to truly understand the lived realities of Negrense farmers.
As field scientists, we know the painstaking process of doing research, much more so in immersing yourself in the work that we do. We give our highest respects to them, who, without question, forfeited their comforts to learn from the masses' struggles in the most direct and scientific way possible โ empirical observation with their own eyes and ears. It is a feat of bravery and self-sacrifice that even the greatest of scientists and researchers could ever dream of.
Military atrocities such as the Negros 19 massacre are not new to us scientists. Back in 2010, the AFP ruthlessly killed renowned ethnobotanist Leonard Co while on fieldwork, a grim reminder of how the military weaponizes the redtagging of civilians to shield their war crimes. This is the fruit of the governmentโs bloodthirsty and militaristic approach in the Philippines. Billions of pesos are poured into purchasing high-powered artillery and bombs from the imperialist powers US and Israel โ all to be unleashed not on invaders nor colonizers, but on Filipinos simply fighting for a better future for all.
We demand swift justice and accountability from the military. We demand for a fair and independent probe into the events of April 19. We call for an end to the weaponization of technology in warfare against the people. Heinous war crimes and brutality have no place in civil society. We are one in calling for and pursuing justice for the Toboso 19 and for the end to the rampant militarization in Negros.
Beyond that, we persist in hope. Today, we mourn. But tomorrow, the seed of their lives will bloom, their incorruptible legacy will evolve, and their indomitable spirit will persist among the scientists, researchers, and STEM students of Diliman and of the country. We honor their lives by continuing the struggle!
JUSTICE FOR ALYSSA, ERROL, RJ, AND MAUREEN!
JUSTICE FOR THE TOBOSO 19!
DEFEND NEGROS!
