Nitrogen is essential for operating a genome center facility. Liquid nitrogen is heavily relied upon for cryopreservation to securely store biological specimens (such as DNA, RNA, and tissues) at temperatures as low as -196 deg C. Gaseous nitrogen is also used as an inert carrier and curtain gas to operate sensitive analytical instruments like mass spectrometers.
