Here is something practical if you work with steel regularly.

How to spot low quality steel before it becomes a problem on site:

✅ Check the surface. Good steel has a consistent, uniform finish. Excessive rust, pitting, or uneven texture before fabrication is a red flag.

✅ Check the edges after cutting. Clean cuts mean good material. Rough or crumbly edges can mean inconsistent composition.

✅ Ask for the mill certificate. Any legitimate steel supplier should have documentation confirming the grade and strength of the material.

✅ Test the weldability. Good structural steel welds cleanly. If the weld area cracks or shows porosity, the steel quality is questionable.
