Celebrating Our On-Grid Solar System at Emumba (2024)

We are thrilled to share our latest achievement: an On-Grid Solar project at Emumba! This journey wasn't without its challenges, but we are immensely proud of what we accomplished together.

Challenges Faced: Commercial projects involving multi-storeyed buildings often grapple with limited roof space, which is crucial for setting up adequately sized solar systems. At Emumba, we maximized the roof's potential by strategically placing as many panels as possible to achieve optimal annual yield while addressing daily and yearly shadow concerns.

We innovatively installed two high-quality carport shed structures, which not only provide shaded seating areas but also reduce the top floor's exposure to the summer sun, thereby decreasing air-conditioning needs. Additionally, we ensured ample space on the southern side of the roof for warming up from the winter sun.

By using state-of-the-art BiFacial TOPCon panels from Jolywood and an on-grid inverter from Growatt New Energy, we achieved the ideal DC/AC ratio and string currents. The system is synchronized with the Diesel Generator (DG), reducing its fuel consumption and maintenance costs during grid unavailability.

Through overcoming these challenges and leveraging advanced technology, we've enabled Emumba to significantly cut energy costs and minimize their carbon footprint. The system is expected to save 182 MWh annually in electric energy needs, equating to a reduction of approximately 128 metric tons of CO2 emissions each year.

Cost of solar system installation on a turn-key basis in August 2023:
Please keep 150-200 Rs/W cost of installation including everything for an ON-GRID system. For hybrid it depends on several factors.
The smaller the system, the higher the cost per unit.
Cost of HYBRID system depends on several factors but is considerably higher than an ONGRID's costs. It depends on how much load you wish to run, for how long, and what kind of battery you would setup.

How to calculate Solar System Size?
Add units used in each month of the past one year. This is given on each month's bill. Multiply this number by 1.1 and you get the size of solar system you should install to get ZERO bills.
So if your annual units add up to 22,613, then you need 22,613 x 1.1 = 24,874 Watt of solar panels = 24.9 kW. Like in the bill example provided.
Simple!
If you have constructed a new house or you will increase usage, all you have to assess is how many units will you use in one year. Multiply that number by 1.1 and you get the solar system size that will JUST fulfill your needs.
This assumes:
1. Less load shedding.
2. Your usage in peak time (4 hours) is 25% or less of your usage in off peak time (20 hours).
3. Current (Aug 2023) 3-phase residential tariff. For other tariffs or different tariffs, calculation may vary.
4. Current NEPRA rules for net-metering. One off peak unit produced is cancelled by one off peak unit used (same for peak unit) and buy back rate is Rs. 22.42. If this changes, the calculations would change.
