🌱 Nature‑Based Solution for Protecting Plum Trees from Scale Insects 🌳
Real personal story
When my plum tree faced a severe attack of scale insects (Holy Effort/Scales)—tiny pests that suck sap and secrete honeydew, leaving the tree coated as if sprayed with sticky/oily liquid—I consulted agricultural experts. The recommended solution was a chemical pesticide (“Advantage”).
Instead of resorting to chemicals, I applied a nature‑based solution (NBS): spraying the entire plant with salt and baking soda mixed water, repeated three times.
✨ Outcome:
The tree recovered fully, free from the disease.
Beneficial biodiversity—insects, flies, and bees—continued to thrive, enjoying the tree’s nectar.
No harm to pollinators or surrounding ecosystem.
🌍 Alignment with Global Standards:
UN SDGs: Supports SDG 15 (Life on Land) and SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption & Production).
TNFD & ISSB (IFRS S1 & S2): Demonstrates biodiversity‑positive risk management and sustainable reporting practices.
IPBES & IPCC: Embodies the principle of bridging science and policy through practical, low‑impact interventions.
IUCN Nature‑Based Solutions Framework: A clear example of ecosystem‑friendly pest management that avoids chemical dependency.
🌿 Key Lesson:
By choosing NBS over pesticides, we protect not only individual trees but also the entire ecosystem and biodiversity. This approach strengthens resilience, reduces chemical footprints, and showcases how local action can align with global sustainability frameworks.
