๐๏ธ CORROSION PROCESS OF REINFORCING STEEL IN CONCRETE
Reinforced concrete is one of the most durable construction materials, but over time, environmental factors can lead to the corrosion of steel reinforcement, causing serious structural damage.
๐น Step 1: Healthy State
In the beginning, concrete provides a highly alkaline environment that forms a protective layer around the steel.
๐ This prevents corrosion and keeps the structure strong and stable.
๐น Step 2: Agent Infiltration
With time, harmful elements such as:
Water ๐ง
Chlorides ๐ง
Carbon dioxide (COโ) ๐ซ๏ธ
enter the concrete through cracks or เคเคฎเคเฅเคฐ concrete.
๐ This reduces alkalinity and destroys the protective layer.
๐น Step 3: Oxide Formation & Expansion
Once protection is lost, steel starts to corrode (rust).
๐ Rust expands (up to several times its original size), creating internal pressure inside the concrete.
๐น Step 4: Cracking & Spalling
Due to this pressure:
Concrete starts cracking
Surface breaks (spalling)
Steel gets exposed
๐ This accelerates corrosion and weakens the structure significantly.
โ ๏ธ Why This is Dangerous
Reduces structural strength
Weakens bond between steel and concrete
Can lead to structural failure if ignored
๐ ๏ธ Prevention
โ Proper concrete cover
โ High-quality concrete mix
โ Waterproofing
โ Regular inspection & maintenance
