Our students of BS 3rd Year, as part of the Food Industry Waste Management course and under the supervision of Dr. Abeera Moin, conducted waste segregation awareness sessions within the department and at local schools. The initiative was designed to promote responsible waste management practices and foster environmental awareness among students and the wider community.

Through informative presentations, interactive discussions, and community engagement activities, participants were introduced to the principles of waste segregation, recycling, and sustainable resource utilization. This outreach activity reflects the department's commitment to integrating academic learning with community service, while empowering students to become advocates for environmental sustainability. By raising awareness and encouraging practical action, such initiatives contribute to the development of environmentally responsible communities and support broader sustainability goals.

World Environment Day 2026 – Visit to Kadero Island

On the occasion of World Environment Day 2026, Dr. Samina Qureshi from the Department of Mass Communication organized a plantation activity and study tour to Kadero Island. The visit provided an opportunity to observe the rich mangrove ecosystem and understand its ecological importance for the coastal environment of Karachi.

During the visit, Dr. S. M. Ghufran Saeed and Dr. Abdul Haq (Department of Food Science and Technology University of Karachi) collected samples for ongoing research activities. Island is home to extensive mangrove forests that act as a natural defense against coastal erosion, sea intrusion, storm surges, and the impacts of climate change. These mangroves also serve as important breeding and nursery grounds for fish, shrimp, crabs, and many other marine species.

Unfortunately, the mangroves of Kadero Island are under threat due to several factors, including pollution, improper waste disposal, climate change, reduced freshwater inflow, and human activities affecting the coastal ecosystem. To address these challenges and restore the natural beauty and ecological balance of the area, mangrove plantation and restoration activities are being carried out by various organizations and environmental groups.
