Steam ejectors, also known as steam jet ejectors or steam jet vacuum pumps, are devices that use high-pressure steam to create a vacuum by entraining and compressing gases or vapors. They are widely used in various industries for applications such as vacuum distillation, degassing, evaporation, and vacuum drying.
The basic principle of operation for a steam ejector involves the expansion of high-pressure steam through a nozzle, known as the motive nozzle, which creates a high-velocity jet of steam. This steam jet entrains and carries along with it the gases or vapors present in the system. As the steam and entrained gases flow through the ejector, they pass through a diffuser section where the velocity of the mixture decreases, resulting in an increase in pressure and a decrease in velocity.
The entrained gases or vapors are compressed and condensed as the pressure increases, allowing the steam and the captured gases to be discharged at a higher pressure. The motive steam condenses during this process, and the resulting condensate is typically separated and reused or discharged from the system.
