RO PLANT CHEMICALS β DETAILED EXPLANATION
Reverse Osmosis (RO) plants require a proper chemical treatment program to ensure long membrane life, stable water quality, and smooth operation. These chemicals help in preventing scaling, fouling, corrosion, microbial growth, and membrane damage.
Below are the main chemicals used in RO systems:
1. Antiscalants
Antiscalants are the most important RO chemicals. Their role is to prevent scale formation on the membrane surface.
Functions:
Prevent calcium carbonate, calcium sulfate, silica, and barium sulfate scaling
Improve membrane efficiency
Reduce cleaning frequency
Increase membrane life
Where used:
Before RO feed line.
2. Membrane Cleaners (Acid & Alkaline)
RO membranes get dirty due to scale, biological fouling, and colloidal deposits.
Cleaning chemicals are of two types:
a. Acidic Cleaners
Used for removing scales (CaCOβ, CaSOβ, Fe deposits)
b. Alkaline Cleaners
Used for removing oil, grease, organic matter, and bio-fouling
Benefits:
Restore membrane performance
Improve salt rejection
Extend membrane life
3. pH Adjustment Chemicals
These chemicals maintain the correct pH level of RO feed water.
Common chemicals:
Sodium Bisulfite (SBS): Removes chlorine from feed water
Hydrochloric Acid (HCl): Reduces pH
Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH): Increases pH
Correct pH protects the membrane from scaling, corrosion, and chlorine attack.
4. Coagulants & Flocculants
These chemicals help remove suspended particles from the water before entering RO.
Purpose:
Improve clarity of feed water
Enhance filtration efficiency
Reduce membrane fouling
Common types: Polymeric flocculants, PAC, ferric-based coagulants.
5. Biocides
Used to control biological growth inside RO membranes.
Functions:
Kill bacteria, algae, fungi
Prevent bio-film formation
Reduce need for frequent cleaning
Some biocides are non-oxidizing, safe for RO membranes.
6. Chlorine Neutralizer
Chlorine damages RO membranes completely.
Sodium Bisulfite (SBS) is used to neutralize chlorine from RO feed water.
Benefits:
Protects membrane from oxidation
Ensures long-term stable performance
7. Scale Inhibitor & Corrosion Control Chemicals
These help protect stainless steel pipelines and system components from corrosion.
Purpose:
Reduce corrosion rate
Protect pumps and piping
Improve RO system reliability
