CASE STUDY 2:
----------------
- Location: Residence in Phase 1, DHA Lahore.
- System: 6kW On-Grid, with Net Metering
- Observation: System was producing less than capacity. Feb to May output was exactly the same but Jun production improved significantly
- Conclusion: The output lines for Feb-May period seem to be truncated and forcibly cutoff at around 230 units. This could probably be caused by a longer shadow cast by lower sun trajectory, during winter to early summer
- Site Visit: PV modules were Floor mounted on roof, surrounded by a 5ft high parapet wall. The gap between wall and the first row of PV modules was only 4ft.
During winter and early summer, first row of PV modules were under the shadow of the wall and giving no production. In summer, the sun was riding higher and the shadow effect was minimal
- Remedial Action: Due to space limitations, PV modules could not be pushed away from the wall.
An elevated structure was fabricated whose lowest point was above the parapet wall. PV modules got full sunlight for the Sun Hours at all times.
System performance improved significantly in the next winters & system output matched the designed values

Q: Which Battery is best suited for a solar system?
A: Conventionally, Automative Lead Acid Batteries were used with UPS systems and even solar systems. Unfortunately, even with the best charging system, they do not last very long.
This is because Automative Batteries are designed to give very high Torque (Amperes) for a very short period to time, to crank up a car or truck engine.
In comparison, UPS or Solar batteries are required to provide steady power for a longer period of time.
Tall Tubular Batteries are also Electrolyte filled but they have a larger volume and they can deliver a sustained current for a much longer period of time. They are specially designed for UPS or Solar applications.
However, with the reducing prices, Lithium Ion or Lithium Iron Phosphate batteries are providing a much better solution.
They may seem more expensive but considering that they have nearly double the DOD rating, we need a smaller battery pack of Lithium Battery when compared to a conventional battery.

CASE STUDY 1
----------------
- Location: Office Building at PECO Road, Lahore
- System: 4.2 kW Hybrid, with Net Metering
- Observation: Every day, production suddenly dropped around 10-11AM. System just produced what was being consumed and capacity was being throttled.
- Conclusion: It was evident from this trend that Grid connection was somehow severed and no Net Metering took place after 10-11AM.
- Site Visit: On physical audit of the system, it was discovered that the Circuit Breaker in customer DB had become faulty and, as load and ambient temperature increased, it tripped.
Once the Grid was disconnected, Net Metering stopped and solar generation was throttled to feed the demand only
- Remedial Action: Circuit Breaker was changed and system output reverted to the normal Bell shaped curve

Q: Which system is most suited for me – On Grid, Hybrid or Off Grid
A: Till last year, when there was no loadshedding, I always recommended ON Grid systems because they are the cheapest & simplest option, with the fastest payback. However, under current scenario, Hybrid System, with appropriate Battery Backup is the best choice. Total cost of Hybrid systems is 1.5-1.8X compared to On Grid and the payback is slightly longer. Off Grid should not be considered unless Grid power is not available, or Gird supply is at a distance from usage point. They are the most expensive system, with the least benefit to user.

Q: Will I ever get paid in PKR by the DISCO for exporting excess energy to the grid?
A: As per AEDB rules, DISCO's are bound to pay the Consumer in PKR for any excess energy / credit Bill Amount at the end of every three months.
However, the reimbursement process is so long and cumbersome, requiring tons of paper work and numerous visit to the concerned offices, that we have not heard of anyone getting a cheque from his / her DISCO.
Unless a Consumer has good contacts in the DISCO offices and tons of patience of time, we would advise not to make it part of the investment decision.
If you manage to get a cheque, consider it as icing on the cake and not part of ROI.

Sizing of a Solar System (or a UPS or a Generator) should NEVER be based on # appliances being used.

This is because Electricity usage is measured in kWhr & not just kW.

We can get kW of each appliance from its tag or operating manual, but estimating the duration of usage (hours) is next to impossible.

More so, because heavy load items like air conditioners, Refrigerators, Deep Freezers & Electric Heaters do not have constant load, even when running continuously. Their compressor / heater keeps running & stopping, depending on thermostat setting.

The only way to calculate optimum system capacity is to take actual consumption for past one year, geographical location and orientation of the site.

Any certified System Provider can do the sizing for you, from your address and latest electricity bill. Reliable companies have no issue sharing their detailed calculations with the customer.

This is a complimentary service and the consumer should not be charged for Sizing of the system.

An incorrectly sized system may be too small, requiring continued payment of electricity charges, though reduced.

Or it can be too large and generating huge credit Bills. I have seen people with Rs 200,000 credit Bill of IESCO and Rs 145,000 of credit bill for LESCO. Their Solar System Providers sold them oversized systems (either by design or due to ignorance of scientific calculations).
A credit bill of Rs 10,000 is better than a credit bill of Rs 100,000 because it tells us that the system is optimally sized.

Q: How do I find out the rate of electricity that I am paying in my Bill?
A: All DISCO's (Distribution Companies) in Pakistan have tariff approved by NEPRA, which is duly displayed on their website.
You can also get the latest tariff list by visiting the nearest office of your area SDO (Sub Divisional Officer), XEN (Executive Engineer) or RO (Revenue Officer).
For Lahore consumers, the link to the tariff page of LESCO is as per following:
https://lesco.pk/lesco-tariff/
Karachi consumers can follow this link to get to the tarriff page of KE:
https://www.ke.com.pk/assets/uploads/2023/07/SRO-977-dated-July-27-2023.pdf
1/ Before looking at the rate card and getting confused by it, first find out the tariff that applies to your connection.
2/ On a LESCO bill, it is shown at the Top Left of the bill, right under the name and address of the consumer.
3/ Look up your tariff (A1 - Residential, A2 - Commercial, A3 - General Services, B - Industrial and so on) in the list and find out the rates being charged to you

In the enclosed picture, the consumer is billed at A1 tariff, with a sanctioned load larger than 5kW.

There are no fixed charges but you can see the peak and off peak charges applicable to this connection

People always ask if investing so heavily in a Solar System, worth the cost?
My short and sweet answer is “Definitely Yes”.
Sharing live data of a nearly 3 year old installation.
First saving started as soon as solar system was installed in sep 2020.
Additional savings kicked in Apr 2021 when net metering was started.
Gas geyser was replaced by an electric geyser in Jan 2021 and the gas billing also dropped to the Min charges fo Rs 250-280/month. Only recently Gas Billing has increased to Rs 670 per month, because SNGPL has revised the minumum bill charges
Totally worth it.

Q: At what rate the DISCO buys the electricity from a NET METERING User
A: Off-peak rate, as determined by NEPRA from time to time, is applicable as your tariff rate for sale of electricity to the DISCO. You can check your off-peak rate from the utility bill issued by your DISCO.
It might seem unfair that you are using electricity during Peak as well as Off Peak time of the day, but the DISCO is only paying us Off Peak Rates.
But in reality, no Solar PV operates during 6PM to 10:30P peak hours. All the power is generated during off peak hours so it is fair that the DISCO pays us based on Off Peak Rates.

Q: Is there a risk of my roof getting damaged during installation of Solar Panels and causing water seepage?
A: No. If proper and safe installation practices are followed, there is absolutely no risk of puncturing the roof. The Rawl Bolts securing the base plate to the roof only go 3-4 inch deep which is the top layer of water proofing and insulation only.
However we offer even a safer solution. The PV frames are not directly fixed on the roof but on kerbstones which weigh around 20 kg each and are just placed on the roof.
Each frame (containing 2 PV modules) is weighed down by four kerbstones, which have a combined weight of around 80 kg.
