The amazing history behind pink salt from Himalayan Salt Range. 💫
The Khewra Salt Mine lies in an administrative subdivision of Jhelum District , punjab Pakistan.
The mine is indeed famous for its pink salt, often known as Himalayan Salt. This mine has average 250,000 visitors a year. Discovered by Alexander's troops in 320 BC, the first mining and trading happened back in Mughal Era. With holding the title of world's largest salt mine, 350,000 tons of salt is mined here on yearly basis with purity of 99.8% of pure sodium chloride. Estimated reserves of salt in the mine vary from 82million tons to 600million tons. 😯
Salt from this mine is the only salt that contains 84+ minerals healthy for human beings and animals. The salt extracted is red, pink, offwhite or transparent. The most commonly used around the world is pink one as it has the optimum level of minerals.
In early British rule, 28,000 to 30,000 tons per annum of salt was mined, but soon after independence, the production and mining took a very fast move. The number of 30,000 tons increased to 125,000 tons as it started to get exported around the globe. Now, 179 countries import pink salt on regualar basis. It was reported that in 2016, 438,000 tons of salt per annum was mined. At that rate of output, the tunnel would be expected to last for another 350 years. So don't worry, this gift of nature is not ending soon. 😉
