Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed a halt on the government campaign against net metering policy for the third time. This decision comes before any formal summary regarding changes in the purchase price is submitted to his office.

A senior officer from the Power Division revealed that they received instructions from the Prime Minister's Office to stop the campaign against net metering. Initially, the Power Division was tasked with forming a narrative through the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, which would then be presented to the cabinet. However, they were asked to step back for the third time.

The current net metering tariff stands at Rs. 10 per kilowatt-hour (kWh). The Power Division had proposed reducing the rate to Rs. 11.30 per unit, aligning with the average solar generation tariff of Independent Power Producers (IPPs).

Key Points:

- Net Metering Tariff: Rs. 10 per kWh
- Proposed Tariff: Rs. 11.30 per unit
- Existing Connections: Approximately 325,000 net metering connections with a total installed capacity of 6,500 MW
- Distribution:
- Top Cities:
- Lahore: 25%
- Rawalpindi: 11%
- Karachi: 8.5%
- Multan and Islamabad: 7.5%
- Faisalabad: 5%
- Peshawar, Bahawalpur, Sialkot, and Gujranwala: 3.7%

The Power Division considers the current purchase price of Rs. 27 per unit as "unsustainable" and believes it burdens non-solar consumers. Net metering allows consumers to generate electricity, reducing their reliance on the grid and lowering bills. However, the increasing adoption of solar systems has raised concerns about excess power generation and grid stabilit

🚫💡 PSA urges the govt to reconsider the 18% GST on imported solar panels in Budget 2025–26.

This tax risks slowing down solar adoption, raising costs, and hurting Pakistan’s clean energy future. Let’s protect progress — not punish it.
