Strengthening Business Strategies: Pressure Testing Assumptions

Throughout my career, I often found myself in the role of a "fixer" for challenging projects and client relationships. It wasn't a position I actively sought, but others recognised my proficiency in it. Oddly, it took me years to comprehend the source of my effectiveness.

On the surface, my ability to quickly build rapport and trust with all stakeholders seemed paramount. However, this skill alone didn't hold the key to my success; it lacked context for preventing lurking issues. The true source of my competence was my knack for swiftly identifying the core problem beneath troubled projects or client relationships.

Curiously, I couldn't explain why this came naturally to me. Was it luck? I had no greater expertise than my peers and often less experience. I worried my luck might run out, and I'd be exposed as a fraud. What was the secret behind my many successful outcomes? The answer dawned on me while tying twine to
secure a load for my car. The frayed twine snapped at its weakest point, much
like problems emerged at the weakest links in business situations. My insight
came from recognizing when people made assumptions – the frayed portions of the rope.

Assumptions are shortcuts, sometimes useful but, if unexamined, can create unforeseen risks. Stress-testing assumptions like engineers test structures in extreme conditions can reveal weak points in business plans or strategies.

Clarifying assumptions involves understanding why they were made, defining their limits, and eliminating weak points through research and dialogue.

Practitioners who pressure test assumptions strengthen their logic, resulting in more robust and reliable business strategies and plans. We can employ a similar approach of rigorous testing to validate the effectiveness of a strategy or plan.
