According to a new study by Finland’s LUT University, solar PV consumes between 2% and 15% of the water that coal and nuclear power plants use to produce just 1 MWh of output; for wind, this percentage ranges from 0.1% to 14%. Under the researchers’ best policy scenario, water consumption could be reduced by 75.1% by 2030, compared to 2015 levels.

New thermodynamic formula to calculate bifacial gains: An American research team developed the new formula by applying to bifacial cells the Shockley-Queisser triangle, which is used to calculate the maximum theoretical efficiency of a monofacial solar cell using a single p-n junction technology. According to the group's findings, the the triangle can help to clarify the deeper physical principles of the bifacial technology.

JA Solar announced that it supplied all PERC modules for a 32MW solar-plus-storage facility. The facility is one of the largest PV plants in Hokkaido, and has been successfully connected to the grid. The project represents an innovative large-scale application of photovoltaic and energy storage technologies, and marks an important milestone in promoting the development of renewable energy in the region.

The project is located in coastal Shibetsu, Hokkaido. The cold, windy climate and extreme weather conditions in the region set a high performance requirement for solar modules. The mono PERC modules provided by JA Solar for the project have excellent mechanical loading performance, ability to maintain high and stable power output within the temperature range of -40℃ and +85℃, as well as in extreme environments such as intense wind pressure, low temperature and snowy conditions. The excellent salt and alkali resistance enables the solar modules to provide a strong guarantee for steady performance and high returns of power generation from the solar plant in the coastal areas. The plant is expected to generate an annual energy yield of 30,000,000kWh, reducing the emission of carbon dioxide by 24,180 tons each year.

Pakistan has invited Chinese companies to take advantage of incentives offered by government for investment and set up solar panels and lithium battery manufacturing units in the country.

The offer was made by Minister for Science and Technology, Fawad Hussain Chaudhry at a meeting with CEO of MERA PC Solutions in Beijing.

The Minister said Pakistan has huge potential in solar and lithium battery manufacturing and there are great opportunities for exports to Africa, Middle East, Central Asia, and Afghanistan.

He said the government would provide all facilities including land, technical support and human resource besides joint ventures opportunities to Chinese companies.

Fawad Chaudhry said Chinese companies should diversify manufacturing in Pakistan as the government wants to enhance production and exports.

The CEO of the MERA PC Solutions said his company would ensure transfer of technology to Pakistan and help increase local manufacturing and enhancing exports.
