At IDS TUL, international doctoral candidates not only develop their academic skills. They also discover the Polish way of celebrating. 🎄🐣🕯️
From warm Christmas gatherings and Easter baskets to Śmigus-Dyngus and the glow of candles on All Saints’ Day, Polish traditions can be surprising, moving and sometimes a little wet! 💦
These experiences also reveal how much different cultures have in common, especially the importance of family, togetherness and remembering loved ones.

🌍 English connects us with the world, while Polish helps us feel at home.
For international doctoral candidates at the Interdisciplinary Doctoral School, learning Polish is more than mastering difficult pronunciation and new vocabulary. It is a way to connect with people, understand everyday life and become part of the local community.
From the incredibly useful “Dzień dobry” to the memorable “chomik”, every new word is a small step forward. And even a simple “Cześć” or “Mam na imię…” can bring a smile to someone’s face. 😊

❄️ Polish weather: expect the unexpected! 🌦️
Arriving in Poland in February can be quite a surprise, especially when you experience freezing air and snow for the very first time! Suddenly, your inner child comes alive: you try to catch snowflakes, have snowball fights with friends, and build a snowman in front of the dormitory. ☃️
The weather in Poland can change very quickly. You may leave home under a clear sky, only to find yourself caught in the rain a few moments later. And snow in April? That can happen too!
Fortunately, every season brings something special. Spring transforms Poland into an incredibly green country, with parks and peaceful places to relax even in the city centre. Summer, although sometimes unpredictable, is usually mild and offers wonderful opportunities to travel, visit the seaside, and explore new destinations.
Training at IDS TUL means being ready for new experiences, including the surprises of Polish weather. After all, adapting to a new climate is also part of the international doctoral journey! 🌍🎓

Inspiring research, meaningful conversations, international perspectives and plenty of positive energy — this is how we remember Doctoral Candidate Day at Lodz University of Technology! 🎓🌍💡
Held under the theme“Diversity and Intercultural Dialogue,” the event brought together doctoral candidates, students, supervisors and members of the university community. It created a vibrant space for sharing ideas, developing new skills and building valuable connections. 🤝✨
From exciting three-minute Lightning Talks and practical workshops to intercultural exchange, networking and an energetic drumming session — every part of the day demonstrated the creativity, openness and diversity of our academic community. 🎤🔬🥁

🌳 Great laboratories, beautiful green spaces... and squirrels in the park. What more could a PhD candidate ask for? 🐿️🔬
What is it really like to live and pursue a PhD in Łódź? Our international doctoral candidates appreciate the city for its green spaces, sports areas and well-maintained parks. A particular favourite is Park na Zdrowiu — a vast green space where it is surprisingly easy to get lost! 🌿
Łódź also offers convenient public transport, student discounts and excellent rail connections. Thanks to its central location, many destinations across Poland can be reached within just a few hours. 🚋🚆🚲
And what is particularly typical of Łódź? There always seems to be another road renovation or a marathon to check before setting off! 😉 Nevertheless, the city’s transport system and infrastructure make a very positive impression.
