🛰️ The ESA Centre in Warsaw - what's planned so far?

Warsaw will host a new European Space Agency centre, the first ESA centre located outside the Agency's founding states and the first major ESA facility in CEE.

The centre's work is planned to focus on three areas:

🔹 Crisis management
🔹 On-orbit operations
🔹 Satellite services monitoring

The centre is expected to specialise in space security, resilience and dual-use technologies, ultimately serving up to 22 ESA member states. First pre-operational activities are expected to begin in 2027.

⚠️ These are the currently planned focus areas; the centre's final scope is still being worked out through cooperation between Poland and ESA.

🌒 Tomorrow, 12 August, a total solar eclipse will cross Europe, the first one visible from mainland Europe in 27 years.

As the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun, a narrow path of totality will sweep across Greenland, Iceland, Portugal and Spain, while Poland and much of Europe see a partial eclipse.

You can watch it live: ESA - European Space Agency is broadcasting from the Javalambre Astrophysical Observatory in Spain, starting 19:30 CEST, with totality at 20:31 CEST. Tune in via ESA Web TV or YouTube.

🔐 Encryption today relies on math that tomorrow's quantum computers could break.

Quantum Key Distribution takes a different path: it secures data using the laws of physics. Any attempt to intercept the key alters it, so intrusions are detected instantly.

Over fibre, a quantum key travels only ~100–150 km before fading, which is why the next frontier is space. Satellites can extend quantum-secure links across continents.

This is exactly where our expertise comes in. At AROBS Polska, our team works on quantum and optical communications, laser ranging functions, high-rate detectors for QKD, and high-speed FPGA, the building blocks of highly secure data transmission.

And the timing matters: according to ESA, Poland's contribution rises to €731M for 2026–2028, a major increase that makes it one of Europe's key players in the technologies shaping digital sovereignty.

Poland continues to strengthen its space ecosystem through long-term investment.

As part of the Polish government's broader strategy to support the national space industry, Minister of Finance and Economy Andrzej Domański announced plans for a PLN 500 million investment fund dedicated to companies operating in Poland's space sector.

The fund is expected to be established by entities within the Polish Development Fund (PFR) Group, including BGK (Bank Gospodarstwa Krajowego), to support innovation, technology development, and the long-term growth of the industry.

The initiative accompanies the creation of the new ESA Civil Security & Resilience Centre in Warsaw and the government's plans to build a nationwide network supporting the development of Poland's space infrastructure.

Proud to contribute to Europe's next generation of autonomous space capabilities. 🚀

As the RAVEN mission continues to attract attention across the European space sector, especially following the announcement of the new ESA Centre in Warsaw, we are pleased to highlight AROBS Polska's contribution as a consortium partner to this important European initiative.

At AROBS Polska, we are responsible for developing the Payload Computer (OBC), the central computing node executing Guidance, Navigation and Control (GNC) algorithms during the Routine Operations phase of the RAVEN mission.

The Payload Computer provides the computing platform and software architecture, enabling:

🔹 Communication with the Ground Segment and Platform OBC
🔹 Mission-critical Guidance, Navigation and Control (GNC) functions and payload control
🔹 Integration with onboard systems and sensors supporting autonomous operations

The mission's first in-orbit demonstrator will validate safe autonomous rendezvous, proximity operations, and satellite visual inspection, paving the way for future European In-Orbit Servicing, orbital logistics and satellite servicing capabilities.

Led by PIAP Space, the RAVEN project brings together industry, research institutions, and public organisations to help shape the future of autonomous space operations in Europe. We look forward to the project's next milestones alongside our consortium partners.

What happens to a satellite at the end of its life? 🛰️

For decades, the answer was: nothing. RAVEN is here to change that.

The future belongs to servicing spacecraft, multi-purpose spacecraft capable of complex manoeuvres around other satellites, satellite visual inspection, transportation, and satellite servicing.

Led by PIAP Space under ESA's FLPP programme, the RAVEN project builds Polish and European capabilities in In-Orbit Servicing (IOS) and Rendezvous and Proximity Operations (RPO), the foundation for future orbital logistics and the protection of space infrastructure.

At AROBS Polska, we're developing RAVEN's on-board computer, the core unit powering the spacecraft's onboard autonomy. The project is currently in Phase B1, focused on the spacecraft's detailed design ahead of the first demonstration mission, RAVEN DEMO I, planned for 2029.

Space debris is more than an environmental concern. It is a complex engineering challenge. 🌎

Future active debris removal and in-orbit servicing missions depend on precise sensing, real-time data processing, reliable onboard electronics, and software that supports critical decisions in space.

This is where AROBS Polska’s expertise becomes relevant, from control electronics and payload computers to FPGA-based systems and embedded software. One example is the ESA-funded CRIMSON project, through which AROBS Polska contributed to technologies intended to support future space debris removal and satellite servicing missions.

Today, our colleagues Michał Szwajewski, CEO of AROBS Polska, and Tadeusz Kocman, Business Development Manager, are representing AROBS Polska at the “IGNIS: Trajectories of the Future” conference, taking place at the Polish Ministry of Development and Technology in Warsaw.

The event brings together representatives of the European space sector, experts, policymakers, and innovation leaders to discuss the future of space technologies and Poland’s growing role in the European space ecosystem.

The conference also marks the first anniversary of the Polish astronaut’s mission to the International Space Station. During the event, our colleagues met ESA Director General Josef Aschbacher at the AROBS Polska stand and exchanged ideas. Another important announcement was that Warsaw will host the new ESA Centre in Poland.

An important day for Poland’s space sector and its continued development. 🚀
