Many congratulations to Krzysztof PiątkowsKi (no j there) for being among the select few to get this year's Graduate Travel Award from the Psychonomic Society! Well deserved!

The Psychonomic Society is pleased to announce that Krzysztof Piątkowski, SWPS University of Social Sciences and Humanities, has been named a recipient of the PS 2024 Graduate Travel Award. Congratulations, Krzysztof! https://bit.ly/3OOdTRA

We are happy to announce that the second paper from dr Ewa Butowska-Buczyńska's PhD thesis has now been published. If you are curious whether guessing (also known as errorful learning) can be used as an effective learning strategy for general knowledge facts*, you can read all about it in Memory & Cognition. Congratulations to Ewa!

*Spoilers below:
No.

Errorful learning—asking questions and forcing responding even before the correct answers are presented for study—has recently been proposed as a way of maximizing the effectiveness of study. However, much support for the superiority of errorful learning over standard learning via reading comes ...

Some good things happened today.
First, our paper with Oliwia Zaborowska didn't get rejected, which is not something that happens every day. Congratulations to Oliwia - with some rewriting it might end up as the first paper from her PhD thesis!
Then we had our first LaMELab end-of-year party in Poznań and we discovered that not only does our new research assistant Jan Odyniec know a good deal about memory, but he is also an expert at making pastries (pictured here before being unwrapped and eaten).
And finally - we now know how a quadruple espresso looks like.

-- Job offer for a post-doc --

We are looking for a post-doc to join LaMELab for a period of up to 47 months.

The successful candidate will join our project team investigating the role of varied retrieval in effective learning. Ideally, they will have prior experience in cognitive research, but any proper experimental background will do as long as they are highly motivated and eager to learn. In addition to project duties, the post-doc will also be strongly encouraged to pursue their own research (experimental!), initially under the guidance of LaMELab P*s.

All essential information should be in the attached document, but any outstanding questions can be directed to the principal investigator on this project, Katarzyna Zawadzka (contact details are also in this document).

Please feel free to forward this to any potentially interested parties!

Application deadline: September 29th, 2023

60% of our lab spent the last couple of days in Germany, first attending a conference and then paying a visit to Beatrice Kuhlmann's lab at Mannheim, where Maciej gave a talk on our joint NCN/DFG-funded work at the cognitive colloquium. We're grateful to all Mannheim staff and students for their warm welcome and some great discussions.

Congratulations to Maciej Hanczakowski, who has received funding from the National Science Centre for his research on metacognition of auditory distraction! 🥳

Given the success rate of 11.45%, he now considers buying some lottery tickets.

Many congratulations to Krzysztof Piątkowski, our 4th year PhD student and the first author on our most recent paper in JEP:LMC!

In this paper we hint at possible similarities in terms of processes underlying encoding into working- and long-term memory. Those who would like to learn what they are and don't have access to the publisher's version can download the post-print from lamelab.org.

Our newest paper - and the first from Ewa Butowska's PhD - is now available online at https://doi.org/10.3758/s13421-021-01254-2. Many congratulations to Ewa!

In this paper we show 1) how (not) to learn foreign vocabulary, and 2) how to publish a series of studies which produced none of the results we expected. Oh, and it's published in open access, so you can download and read it straightaway.

Congratulations to our post-doc, Karolina Lukasik, on their newly published paper 🥳
Karolina's background is both in psychology and neurobiology, and the paper neatly combines their two areas of expertise.

Oh, and it can be accessed for free, so you can read the full text or download it from https://doi.org/10.1111/ejn.15354.
