Summary: Laser cleaning in Legnica’s Cathedral, Poland.
We restored 200 m² of aged sandstone balconies at the top of the cathedral’s tower - using precision laser ablation technology.
The Value:
Legnica Cathedral is one of the oldest and most important landmarks in the city, with a history dating back to the early 13th century.
A large amount of original sandstone was preserved, making the tower an exceptionally valuable heritage object.
The challenges:
Working at height.
Handling delicate, centuries-old sandstone showing clear signs of aging, erosion, and atmospheric contamination.
The tool:
HULK 500 multimode ablation laser, equipped with a 15-meter fiber-optic cable for precision cleaning at altitude.
The process:
- Controlled operation using low energy densities and gradual power calibration.
- Removal of surface deposits - urban pollution, black patina, and biological growth.
- Preservation of the original texture and natural color variations of the sandstone.
- Reduction of dust and waste emissions - essential in sacred heritage environments.
The Conservator’s assessment:
The process was recognized as both effective and safe for conservation.
For everyone involved, it was rewarding to see centuries-old craftsmanship revealed safely and beautifully through light.
