Explore Illumina, Inc.'s Mapped Read technology, an innovative sequencing and informatics approach that incorporates nanowell molecular position information to provide additional genomic context in whole-genome analysis. By preserving spatial proximity relationships between DNA molecules during on-flow-cell library generation, mapped reads enable inference of long-range information using short-read sequencing. This added context improves read mapping in repetitive or complex regions, supports more accurate structural variant detection, and facilitates long-range phasing while maintaining the accuracy and scalability.. Together, these advances represent a meaningful step toward more comprehensive and informative whole-genome analyses.

Funding for the G4PL – Genomics for Poland project!

We are pleased to announce that the project entitled G4PL – Genomics for Poland, headed by Prof. Luiza Handschuh, has received funding from the European Funds for a Smart Economy (FENG) program, Action 2.4 Research Infrastructure of Modern Economy.

The consortium leader, the Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry PAS along with the Poznan Supercomputing and Networking Center, will collaborate with eleven research units:
• Institute of Human Genetics PAS
• Nencki Institute of Experimental Biology PAS
• Poznan University of Technology
• University of Warsaw
• Medical University of Bialystok
• University of Lodz
• University of Gdansk
• Jagiellonian University
• Cardinal Stefan Wyszynski National Institute of Cardiology – National Research
Institute in Warsaw
• Maria Sklodowska-Curie National Research Institute of Oncology – Gliwice Branch
• Łukasiewicz Research Network – Polish Center for Technology Development

The primary objective of the project is to establish a nationwide network of laboratories conducting research and providing services in the field of genomics, serving academic, commercial and healthcare institutions. These activities will support the development of science, personalized medicine, precise diagnostics, innovative therapies, and targeted prevention.

The network will be equipped with advanced infrastructure for genome research, including high-throughput long-read sequencing machines and a device for creating optical maps. The project will also result in the collection of new genomes, including those from patients with rare diseases, the integration and re-analysis of existing data, and their sharing within a nationwide repository. New IT tools for genome analysis will also be developed, utilizing artificial intelligence algorithms and quantum technologies.

Population genomic research contributes to a deeper understanding of genetic variation, disease prevalence, and predisposition, enabling improved diagnostics, personalized treatment, and more effective preventive measures. It also translates into tangible economic benefits, as well-targeted prevention, precise diagnostics, and personalized therapy reduce healthcare costs. The project plans to sequence samples from 6,000-7,000 donors. Some of these samples will constitute Poland's contribution to the Genome of Europe (GoE) project.

Project value: PLN 248,337,770.24.
Project funding: PLN 180,481,656.59.
Implementation period: 2026-2029.
The non-financial contribution to the project is made by BCODERS S.A. and Analityk Genetyka Unrug Wójtowicz Sp. k.

The project is co-financed by the European Union under the European Funds for a Smart Economy program.
