🧐Czym jest urolityna A i gdzie występuje? Czy każdy człowiek wytwarza urolitynę A w tej samej ilości? Kiedy może się pojawić w postaci leku i w jakich schorzeniach będzie miała zastosowanie?

📌Nasi naukowcy, badając przez kilkanaście lat urolitynę A powstającą w jelitach, odkryli, że działa ona przeciwzapalnie i wpadli na pomysł, żeby zastosować ją miejscowo na skórę. Na podstawie ich badań powstało kilka patentów, które mogą zamienić się w nowe kosmetyki przeciwstarzeniowe oraz w nowe leki na stany zapalne skóry i błon śluzowych.

The good news just keeps coming!
Our team member, Dr Weronika Skowrońska, will take on the role of primary research contributor in a project entitled "Biotechnological method for production of 8-prenylnaringenin for application in the treatment of inflammatory skin diseases", led by Dr Jan Krzysztoforski (Faculty of Chemical and Process Engineering, Warsaw University of Technology). The project is funded under the National Science Centre (NCN) SONATA scheme.
The starting plant material will be hops (Lupuli flos), and the first step will be to optimize supercritical fluid extraction. Subsequent chemical and biotechnological processing will yield an extract with a high content of 8-prenylnaringenin—a potent phytoestrogen and a promising anti-inflammatory agent.
The enriched extracts are expected to demonstrate enhanced activity against skin inflammation. To verify this, various in vitro and in vivo models will be used, including a rat model of atopic dermatitis. The interaction between the preparations and human skin microbiota ex vivo will also be studied.
This marks yet another collaboration between Weronika and Jan.

We are excited to announce that our team member, Dr Aleksandra Kruk, has received funding to execute the project entitled "Evaluation of the potential of Geum urbanum in preventing dysbiosis and associated oral cavity pathogens growth" under the NCN Sonata scheme.

The primary objective of the project is to evaluate the potential of an aqueous extract from Geum urbanum in preventing and treating oral microbiota dysbiosis.
The main hypotheses are that the tannins contained in the extract may inhibit the growth of key oral pathogens such as Streptococcus mutans and Porphyromonas gingivalis, support microbiota diversity, and stimulate epithelial cells to produce antimicrobial peptides (AMPs). Verifying these will provide a better understanding of the mechanisms of action of Geum urbanum and contribute to the development of new strategies for preventing oral diseases using natural, safe, and accessible substances.

This is Aleksandra’s third consecutive project funded by the National Science Centre of Poland (NCN) to be carried out in our lab, following Miniatura and Sonatina. Additionally, this project includes collaboration with our partner, the NatuRAPT lab (University of Antwerp, Belgium). We gaan ervoor!

Microbiota Lab has experience with various microbiome studies (gut, skin, vaginal), and now oral microbiota will expand our portfolio!

🌿 Exciting News from MicrobiotaLab! 🌿

The end of September was an incredibly active period for the MicrobiotaLab team. First, almost the entire team participated in the Probiotics, Prebiotics & New Foods conference held in Rome. Following this, Professor Sebastian Granica and Weronika Skowrońska presented the results of their research at the 2nd Natural Cosmetics International Meeting, which took place this year in Kielarowa, near Rzeszow, from September 20th to 22nd.

We are incredibly proud to announce that Weronika Skowrońska received the Phytochemical Society of Europe award for the best oral presentation during the conference. Weronika showed the progress made so far in project "Supporting Therapy of Non-Healing Wounds with Witch Hazel Bark" (PI: Karolina Pawłowska, projected financially supported by NCN's Preludium funding scheme).

Congratulations, Weronika! 🎉 We're keeping our fingers crossed for the further implementation of the project and the highly significant research on the role of skin microbiota in wound healing, as well as the potential use of natural products to support their treatment

Hi there!
In the last month, we had the immense pleasure of hosting two exceptional students in our laboratory: Hussein Abbas from Lebanon and Luna Malesani from Italy. During their stay as part of the Score-IFMSA scientific exchange, they had the opportunity to become familiar with the experiments conducted in the Microbiota Lab related to studying the bilateral interactions between active compounds of traditionally used hop cones and the human gut microbiota. Their work was supervised by our Ph.D. student, Maciej Korczak. We hope the students will remember their time in our laboratory positively, and hopefully, this month-long internship will inspire them for their research and future scientific careers.
Hussein and Luna, you are always welcome in the Microbiota Lab.

Hi everyone!
The beginning of August brought another fantastic piece of news for the Microbiota Lab team. Dr. Marcin Równicki has been awarded funding for research as part of the National Science Centre's Sonatina 7 funding scheme. In his project, Marcin will focus on the molecular mechanisms responsible for the growth resumption in persister cells of uropathogenic E. coli.

Given the growing problem of recurrent urinary tract infections, we're very excited to see the progress of this project and will be sure to keep you all informed of any new discoveries.

W ramach jej poruszany był temat znaczenia mikrobiomu skóry, jego interakcji z substancjami zawartymi np. w kosmetykach oraz roli bakterii bytujących na naszej skórze w rozwoju chorób skóry.
