Abstract:
Soil is inhabited by many plant parasitic and free-living nematode species that constitute a significant component of the soil food web. Precise morphological and molecular characteristics of these animals are important for plant protection and ecological research. To date, only a small fraction of the described nematode species has been characterized at the molecular level. The characterization of nematode species and the description of new ones is an ongoing process. The importance of this process, as well as recently described and characterized soil nematode species, will be discussed. Additionally, the results of metabarcoding optimalization studies performed on mock soil nematode communities will also be presented.

🪲🌍 Globalna rewizja Mycetaeidae właśnie ujrzała światło dzienne! [English version below]

Ukazało się najbardziej kompleksowe w historii opracowanie rodziny Mycetaeidae, które całkowicie zmienia nasze spojrzenie na tę rzadką grupę chrząszczy.

🔬 Dzięki połączeniu szczegółowych analiz morfologicznych i molekularnych, nowa publikacja autorstwa badaczy z MIZ (prof. Wioletta Tomaszewska i prof. Karol Szawaryn) oraz Instituto de Ecología (Meksyk) (Dr Emmanuel Arriaga Varela), przynosi nową klasyfikację, nowe gatunki, nowy rodzaj oraz solidne filogenetyczne potwierdzenie ich miejsca na drzewie życia.

📖Co zawiera publikacja?
• pełną rewizję światowych gatunków Mycetaeidae,
• klucze do oznaczania rodzajów i gatunków,

✔️ Opisano nowy rodzaj – Afromycetaea gen. nov.
✔️ Dodano aż 7 nowych gatunków z Afryki i Madagaskaru
✔️ Przeniesiono Mycetaea ciliata do nowego rodzaju (comb. nov.) ✔️ Dwa historyczne gatunki uznano za incertae sedis z powodu braku materiału typowego
✔️ Filogeneza potwierdza monofiletyzm Mycetaeidae i ich siostrzaną relację z Cerasommatidiidae

🧬 Nowo opisane gatunki to: Mycetaea tenerifensis sp. nov. — Teneryfa; Afromycetaea brevis, A. fikaceki, A. mpondo — RPA; Afromycetaea angulata, A. borealis, A. ranomafana — Madagaskar

🌱 Dlaczego to ważne? Bo praca ta:
• porządkuje globalną wiedzę o jednej z najmniej poznanych rodzin Coccinelloidea,
• wprowadza stabilną klasyfikację opartą na danych morfologicznych i genetycznych,
• ujawnia nieznaną dotąd różnorodność Afryki i Madagaskaru,
• tworzy fundament pod przyszłe badania ekologiczne, ewolucyjne i biogeograficzne

🪲🌍 A global revision of Mycetaeidae has just been published!

The most comprehensive study of the Mycetaeidae family in history has just been released, completely transforming our understanding of this rare group of beetles.

🔬 Thanks to a combination of detailed morphological and molecular analyses, the new publication by researchers from MIZ (Prof. Wioletta Tomaszewska and Prof. Karol Szawaryn) and Instituto de Ecología (Mexico) (Dr Emmanuel Arriaga Varela) introduces a new classification, new species, a new genus, and robust phylogenetic confirmation of their placement on the tree of life.

📖What does the publication include?
• a complete revision of all known Mycetaeidae species worldwide,
• identification keys for genera and species,
• an overview of larval morphology, nomenclatural history, and distribution,
• a phylogenetic reconstruction confirming the monophyly of Mycetaeidae and their sister relationship with Cerasommatidiidae.

🌍 What’s new? A lot!
✔️ Three genera recognized within the family,
✔️ A new genus described — Afromycetaea gen. nov.,
✔️ Seven new species from Africa and Madagascar,
✔️ Mycetaea ciliata transferred to a new genus (comb. nov.),
✔️ Two historical species designated as incertae sedis due to lack of type material,
✔️ Phylogeny confirms the monophyly of Mycetaeidae and their sister relationship with Cerasommatidiidae.

🧬 Newly described species: Mycetaea tenerifensis sp. nov. — Tenerife; Afromycetaea brevis, A. fikaceki, A. mpondo — South Africa; Afromycetaea angulata, A. borealis, A. ranomafana — Madagascar

🌱 Why is this important?
Because this work:
• organizes global knowledge on one of the least-studied families of Coccinelloidea,
• introduces a stable classification based on morphological and genetic data,
• reveals previously unknown diversity in Africa and Madagascar,
• lays the foundation for future ecological, evolutionary, and biogeographical research.

‼️Fragmenta Faunistica – A New Chapter

Fragmenta Faunistica is entering 2026 with important developments that strengthen its scientific focus, openness, and editorial excellence.

🔎 The journal continues as a diamond open‑access publication, free of charge for both authors and readers, and published fully in English, supporting broad accessibility and international interest in faunistic and taxonomic research. Accepted papers are published online immediately, allowing research to be openly available without delay.

🧭 A refreshed Editorial Board will guide this new phase:
• Editor‑in‑Chief: Karol Szawaryn
• Editors: Gema Trigos‑Peral, L**h Karpiński, Adam Stroiński

🌍 Fragmenta Faunistica remains dedicated to publishing high‑quality faunistic studies (including ecological data) that, although difficult to place in higher‑ranked journals, and taxonomic studies are essential for biodiversity research and conservation in a rapidly changing world. We accept research on both invertebrates and vertebrates.

📢 We warmly invite researchers to submit their manuscripts and contribute valuable faunistic and taxonomic data to an open platform serving the scientific community.
