Europe just put real money behind nuclear again — and, as always, the welds are the hardest part.
In March 2026 the European Commission unveiled a strategy to bring the continent's first small modular reactors (SMRs) online in the early 2030s. The numbers are serious: total SMR capacity could reach 17 to 53 GW, with around €241 billion of nuclear investment needed by 2050. Brussels is openly framing it as one of Europe's next great industrial projects.
Here's the part the headlines skip. SMRs change HOW reactors are built. Instead of one-off mega-sites poured in place over a decade, the model is a "shipyard" — modular, assembly-line fabrication with factory-based quality control, cutting build times to 24–36 months. That shift multiplies the welding, in the shop and on site, and puts a premium on welders who deliver shop-grade quality at production pace.
And these aren't ordinary welds. Reactor vessels and primary circuits are among the most demanding joints in all of industry: thick sections, exotic alloys, full traceability, strict code compliance, and non-destructive testing that simply cannot fail. New automation is impressive — a full-size reactor-vessel weld that once took close to a year can now be done in around a day — but the machines still need certified welders and welding engineers behind them, qualifying the procedures and owning the result.
And that's where the bottleneck forms. Europe is already around 300,000 welders short (EWF) and ageing out. As nuclear, hydrogen, green steel and offshore wind all ramp at once, the constraint won't be steel or reactors — it'll be certified, compliant crews.
