In the parking lot of the Miyazaki prefectural building, the massive concrete pillars rest on metal frames that seem almost too delicate to carry such an enormous weight. Yet, their purpose is far from decorative—these supports are specially engineered to function as seismic shock absorbers. By cushioning vibrations during an earthquake, they protect the structure above and help it remain stable. A brilliant piece of engineering. 💡
