The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers awarded a $1.1 billion contract for the Río Puerto Nuevo Flood Risk Management Project, the largest civil works contract the Corps has ever awarded in Puerto Rico (ENR, 2026).
The scope includes widening the lower Río Piedras from 80 to 160 feet, floodwalls 24–31 feet high along roughly 5,200 feet, and channel dredging and utility relocations. The project is expected to prevent about $126 million in damages annually.
Megaprojects like this depend on rigorous construction management and inspection to stay on schedule, on budget and in compliance.
