ECCENTRIC STRIP FOOTING | Civil Engineering Design

Eccentric strip footing is used when the column load does not act at the center of the footing. In this case, the resultant load shifts toward one side, creating eccentric loading and a non-uniform (trapezoidal) soil pressure distribution.

📐 Given Example

• Total footing width, B = 4.00 m
• Heel projection, P = 2.05 m
• Toe projection, A = 1.35 m
• Column width, C = 0.30 m
• Stem thickness = 0.60 m
• Retaining depth = 6.60 m

🔍 Key Design Concept

When P ≠ A, the resultant shifts from the center of the footing. Here, the eccentricity acts towards the toe, producing:

➡️ Higher soil pressure at the toe
➡️ Lower soil pressure at the heel
➡️ Trapezoidal bearing pressure below the footing

📊 Design Checks

✔ Resultant should remain within the middle third of the footing to avoid tension/uplift.
✔ Ensure σmin > 0.
✔ Check maximum soil pressure σmax against the allowable bearing capacity of soil.
✔ Design the footing for bending moment, shear and bearing.
✔ Check overall stability against overturning and sliding.

🧮 Basic Soil Pressure Formula

σmax = (W/A) (1 + 6e/B)
σmin = (W/A) (1 − 6e/B)

Where:
W = Total vertical load
A = Footing area
e = Eccentricity
B = Footing width
