🦠BIOENG at 11th workshop of the Cost Action PurpleGain 💜

Our colleague Joana Fradinho is in Thessaloniki, Greece, participating in the 11th workshop of the Cost Action PurpleGain – Purple Phototrophic Bacteria: Application Potential and Stakeholder Perspectives.
Her presentation covered the topic “Purple Bacteria in the Circular Bioeconomy: From Side Streams to High‑Value Products”, " highlighting the potential of purple phototrophic bacteria to valorise residual streams and contribute to the production of sustainable and high-value bioproducts within a circular bioeconomy framework.

📢📢 New publication!!

This work reports a solvent-free, mild-aqueous strategy for the recovery of polyhydroxyalkanoates directly from the wet bacterial biomass using multi-enzyme systems from Tenebrio molitor. 🪱 Under optimized conditions, a high polymer yield and integrity was achieved, while reducing carbon footprint up to seven-fold compared with conventional extraction methods.♻️

This study was developed within the , and is the outcome of the collaboration between BIOENG, the University of Belgrade (Serbia), the Polish Academy of Sciences (Poland), the Krakow University of Economics (Poland),and the National Technical University of Athens (Greece).

🔬 BIOENG at EXPO FCT 2026 🌿

BIOENG was present once again at EXPO FCT, the Open Day of NOVA FCT, engaging with students, teachers, and families interested in exploring science and engineering pathways.

This year, the event welcomed more than 5,000 young people, offering them the opportunity to experience first-hand what it means to be part of NOVA FCT.

Throughout the day, we shared how our research in biopolymers, microbial processes, and sustainable biotechnology contributes to addressing real-world challenges, from waste valorisation to advanced drug delivery systems.

Visitors also had the opportunity to learn about the projects currently ongoing at our group, including CO2toPHA, Pacto da Bioeconomia Azul, Beat - Bioeconomy at Textiles, Agriloop, Biolamer Project, Upstream Horizon, ReLEAF Project EU, and SATISPHACTION – EIC Pathfinder.

Events like EXPO FCT are an important opportunity to connect with future students and communicate the role of science in building more sustainable and innovative solutions.

See you next year! 👋

📢 New Publication 📢 This study shows how hydrodynamics, namely specifically aeration (air supply) and agitation (stirring speed), influence the chemical structure and flow behavior (rheology) of the exopolysaccharide (EPS) produced by the bacterium Ensifer meliloti SEMIA 135 🧫

This study is the outcome of the work developed by Rui dos Santos Ferreira Filho, a PhD student from the Federal University of Rio Grande in Brazil, during his internship at BIOENG, under the supervision of Prof. Filomena Freitas.

📢📢 New publication!!

This work reports the valorisation of cheese whey into a rhamnose-rich polysaccharide with excellent film-forming properties. The bioprocess was optimized in bioreactor and the produced polysaccharide was used for the fabrication of biodegradable antimicrobial films for active food packaging. ♻️🧀

This study is the outcome of the collaboration between BIOENG, the Université de Sfax (Tunisia), the University of Liège (Belgium) and the Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1 (France).

📢📢 New publication!!

This work reports the production of a rare GAG‑like polysaccharide made of GulNAcA and GlcNAc by the marine Alteromonas macleodii strain Mo169 🌊 The purified EPS shows an unusual disaccharide repeat and distinctive structural features, highlighting its promise for biotechnological applications.

This study is the outcome of the collaboration between BIOENG, the University of Naples Federico II (Italy) and the company Pacific Biotech (French Polynesia), aiming for the valorization of marine resources.

Great efforts from all authors involved, congratulations!
