📢 BIOENG at the 13th International Conference on Sustainable Solid Waste Management! 🚮♻️

Our colleagues Professor Maria Reis, Cristiana Torres, Joana Batista and Jorge Viana travelled to Kos, Greece. The conference gathered global experts, researchers and industry leaders to discuss cutting-edge solutions in the circular economy, waste-to-resource valorisation, and sustainable waste management strategies 🌍💡
The BIOENG team stood out by presenting their latest research developed under the scope of the European Projects Agriloop and ReLeaf.

Huge congratulations to the entire team for their outstanding work and for representing BIOENG so brilliantly!



🌱 Joana Batista presented her work on upcycling fruit waste and sewage sludge into high-value VFAs through optimized anaerobic fermentation. Joana also successfully participated in the LCA4WASTE Summer School, focusing on Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) for circular waste management!

🔬 Jorge Viana shared his insights on the impact of organic loading rates on the monomer composition and molecular weight of PHA produced with mixed microbial cultures.

🌿 BioEng Team in Action! 🌍

On June 17th, our group joined forces with the Vita Nativa Association for a meaningful volunteering day at the historic Fábrica da Pólvora de Vale de Milhaços.
Since 2020, Vita Nativa and Seixal have partnered to map and protect the unique biodiversity of this place. Their work led to the creation of the Biodiversity Enhancement Plan for the Fábrica da Pólvora de Vale de Milhaços, which aims to monitor species, restore local ecosystems and raise environmental awareness.
We were thrilled to contribute directly to this mission by rolling up our sleeves to tackle environmental restoration - specifically by uprooting invasive acacia trees to help native species thrive! 🪓🌱

To wrap up a productive morning of hard work, we enjoyed a delicious team picnic together under the trees 🧺🥪

A huge thank’s to Vita Nativa for having us and for their tireless work in conserving our local natural heritage!

🚀 We are hiring 2 research assistants for our CO2 to PHA project, where our goal is to use green technology to turn CO2 into sustainable bioplastics! In this role, you will get hands-on lab experience growing purple and green photosynthetic bacteria, developing smart online monitoring tools using NIR or Raman spectroscopy and optimizing the extraction, purification and final characterization of the produced PHA. Our colleague Joana Fradinho is in Thessaloniki, Greece, participating in the 11th workshop of the Cost Action PurpleGain – Purple Phototrophic Bacteria: Application Potential and Stakeholder Perspectives.
Her presentation covered the topic “Purple Bacteria in the Circular Bioeconomy: From Side Streams to High‑Value Products”, " highlighting the potential of purple phototrophic bacteria to valorise residual streams and contribute to the production of sustainable and high-value bioproducts within a circular bioeconomy framework.

This work reports a solvent-free, mild-aqueous strategy for the recovery of polyhydroxyalkanoates directly from the wet bacterial biomass using multi-enzyme systems from Tenebrio molitor. 🪱 Under optimized conditions, a high polymer yield and integrity was achieved, while reducing carbon footprint up to seven-fold compared with conventional extraction methods.♻️

This study was developed within the , and is the outcome of the collaboration between BIOENG, the University of Belgrade (Serbia), the Polish Academy of Sciences (Poland), the Krakow University of Economics (Poland),and the National Technical University of Athens (Greece).

🔬 BIOENG at EXPO FCT 2026 🌿

BIOENG was present once again at EXPO FCT, the Open Day of NOVA FCT, engaging with students, teachers, and families interested in exploring science and engineering pathways.

This year, the event welcomed more than 5,000 young people, offering them the opportunity to experience first-hand what it means to be part of NOVA FCT.

Throughout the day, we shared how our research in biopolymers, microbial processes, and sustainable biotechnology contributes to addressing real-world challenges, from waste valorisation to advanced drug delivery systems.

Visitors also had the opportunity to learn about the projects currently ongoing at our group, including CO2toPHA, Pacto da Bioeconomia Azul, Beat - Bioeconomy at Textiles, Agriloop, Biolamer Project, Upstream Horizon, ReLEAF Project EU, and SATISPHACTION – EIC Pathfinder.

Events like EXPO FCT are an important opportunity to connect with future students and communicate the role of science in building more sustainable and innovative solutions.
