The first harvest only takes place when the tree is around 25 years old. After that, its bark can be carefully removed approximately every nine years, without harming the tree.

Over a lifetime that can exceed 200 years, the same cork oak may provide cork for up to 16 harvests—making cork one of the few natural materials that can be repeatedly harvested while the tree continues to grow.
