๐„๐•๐„๐๐“: From August 31 to September 4, 2026, our PhD student Adรฉlio Fumo participated in the 27th YUCOMAT Conference 2026, held in Herceg Novi, Montenegro, where he delivered an oral presentation entitled โ€œElectrodeposition of iron-based alloys from alkaline single-oxide suspensions.โ€ This work forms part of his PhD research, supervised by Dr. Andrei Kovalevsky and Dr. Daniela Vanessa Lopes. During the conference, Adรฉlio also had the honour and pleasure of meeting and discussing research with Prof. Yury Gogotsi, a world-renowned materials scientist and a pioneer in the field of MXenes and advanced nanomaterials. We also gratefully acknowledge the valuable contributions of our collaborators, Dr. Luc Lajaunie and Dr. Sara Flores, from the Universidad de Cรกdiz, Spain.

His work focused on approaches for the recovery and reuse of nickel from end-of-life high-temperature fuel/electrolysis cells. The research was conducted under the supervision of Dr Aleksey Yaremchenko and Dr Francielly Roussenq Cesconeto, with guidance from Dr Alexander Bamburov, within the framework of the project ๐—–๐—Ÿ๐—˜๐—”๐—ฅ๐—ก๐—˜๐—ฆ๐—ฆ (ERA-MIN3/0005/2023, funded by FCT through the ERA-MIN3 European Network).

๐—˜๐—ฉ๐—˜๐—ก๐—ง: This week, members of the Lab SSI&EC, Dr. Alexander Bamburov and Dr. Aleksey Yaremchenko, attended the 25th International Conference on Solid State Ionics (SSI-25), held in Singapore from 5 to 10 July. They presented recent results โ€” two oral presentations and one poster โ€” obtained within the framework of the ALCHEMHY Project EU (Grant Agreement No. 101177996, funded by the European Commission) and the CLEARNESS project (ERA-MIN3/0005/2023, funded by the FCT within the ERA-MIN3 European Network). The work carried out within the ALCHEMHY project focuses on the direct electrochemical synthesis of ammonia using protonic ceramic cells. The CLEARNESS project aims to recover and reuse components, particularly nickel, from end-of-life high-temperature fuel and electrolysis cells.

๐—˜๐—ฉ๐—˜๐—ก๐—ง: Last week, Aleksey Yaremchenko and Mehdi Hedayati represented the Lab SSI&EC at the 8th International Conference โ€œProspects on Protonic Ceramic Cellsโ€ (PPCC 2026), organized by the International Society for Protonic Ceramic Conductors (ISPCยฒ) and held in Nรฎmes, France, on 23-26 July 2026. Dr Aleksey Yaremchenko reported on an assessment of perovskite cathode materials for the direct electrochemical ammonia synthesis using protonic ceramic cells. Mehdi Hedayati shared results on the effects of a nickel oxide sintering aid on the processing and properties of a Ba(Ce,Zr,Y,Yb)Oโ‚ƒ solid electrolyte. Both studies were conducted in cooperation with partners from CIIAE - Iberian Centre for Research in Energy Storage within the framework of the ALCHEMHY project (Grant Agreement No. 101177996, funded by the European Commission).

๐——๐—˜๐—™๐—˜๐—ก๐—ฆ๐—˜: Diana Santos, a student of DEMaC/UA (Departamento de Engenharia de Materiais e Cerรขmica - Universidade de Aveiro), successfully defended her industrial project entitled โ€œEffect of the colloidal solโ€“gel synthesis route on the textural and electrochemical properties of CaTiOโ‚ƒ, SrTiOโ‚ƒ, and BaTiOโ‚ƒ.โ€ The project was carried out at the Lab SSI&EC under the supervision of Dr. Francielly Roussenq Cesconeto and Dr. Parisa Amirkhizi. Dianaโ€™s objective was to assess the feasibility of industrial-scale production of titanate materials with enhanced performance for electronic and energy-conversion applications using a more environmentally friendly synthesis pathway than the traditional solid-state reaction route.

๐๐„๐– ๐๐”๐๐‹๐ˆ๐‚๐€๐“๐ˆ๐Ž๐: Our article, โ€œSelf-activating Ti3AlC2 MAX phase-Ni/Ni-Al composite electrodes for hydrogen evolution in alkaline mediaโ€, has recently been published in the International Journal of Hydrogen Energy. In this work, Ti3AlC2 MAX phase, a well-known precursor for MXenes, was explored as an active component embedded in metallic Ni and Ni-Al electrodes for alkaline hydrogen evolution. The proposed electrode architectures behave as dynamic, self-activating systems, with their performance improving as the surface evolves under cathodic polarisation in strongly alkaline conditions. This research was led by Daniela Lopes, with an important contribution from our former MSc student Amรฉrico Cruz, based on his thesis work, as well as from other Lab SSI&EC members Parisa Amirkhizi and Andrei Kovalevsky. The work was carried out in collaboration with Sergii Sergiienko from the Centre of Excellence for Advanced Materials Application, Slovak Academy of Sciences, Slovak Republic.

๐—ง๐—˜๐—”๐— : We welcome Afonso Magalhaes and Pedro Cabrela, masterโ€™s students of DEMAC (Departamento de Engenharia de Materiais e Cerรขmica - Universidade de Aveiro) who recently joined the Lab SSI&EC team. Afonso will carry out research activities within an industry-funded service provision project coordinated by Dr. Daniela V. Lopes. He will contribute to the development of sustainable electrochemical approaches for the valorization of iron-containing raw materials, supporting ongoing efforts toward more circular and low-carbon materials processing. Pedro will conduct research within the CLEARNESS project (funded by FCT under the ERA-MIN3 European network) focusing on the recovery and reuse of components from end-of-life high-temperature fuel cells and electrolyzers.
